Content Types

Options

Hi: I don't quite understand content types completely. Is it possible to copy rename and use the same content type? We have a custom content type that another vendor created for us, not Convio. I want to make a new content type but use the layout from the existing one (http://tmmc.pub30.convio.net/what-we-do/our-patients/current-patients/) Will this work? Also, how do I edit the list to add more listings? Thanks.

Content types are a way to separate your content into high-level logical blocks. Each content type usually has a set of unique fields not present in other content types. If you're thinking of creating a new content type that will have same fields as an existing content type, then most likely a better solution is to add a new field to an existing content type, like a category, to help segment that type of content.

For example, if you are creating a website that features animals, instead of having a separate content type for Cats, Dogs, Horses, etc. It is best to have one content type Animal & have a drop-down category for type of animal. This will not only make it easier for authors to enter content, but also it will simplify dynamic list rendering. If you need to render a list of animals on a site (regardless of their type) you can easily do that with one content type, if you have multiple content types, you will have to render multiple lists.

I would caution you against creating any additional content types, as too many content types can create authoring problems down the line. I would also recommend reading the Implementation Plan that was given to you by Convio, to fully understand content types, why certain content types have been created in your site and how they are designed to be used.

If this does not address your questions, please describe in more detail what in the current site is not working for you and what you would like to achieve.

    Sincerley,

    Elizabeth
