Blocked Emails from BBIS

Options
Over the past year, University of Alabama as seen an increase in "blocked" emails as companies increase their IT security to prevent malicious emails. These email are marked by Blackbaud as a hard bounce and added to their blacklist even though the email address is valid and was not reported as spam by the users. Many of our high-level prospects are affected by this. Are other universities in countering this problem? Has anyone sent a "Mark as safe" campaign?

  • We haven't done anything like that, but have you made sure that you are sending mail from a domain with a valid SPF record that Blackbaud is allowed to use?

We find that our emails get blocked a lot if we use a from addrwhatever@unc.edu because the blackbaud mail servers are not verified senders at unc.edu - we added an spf record for @ give.unc.edu and we use noreply@give.unc.edu as the from address for all of our BBIS emails.

It is absolutely critical to have an SPF record set up for whatever from domain you're usingg.

  • Thanks Rick. I will admit that I'm not too familiar in this area but I will be looking into it with our university DC provider.

Based on prior talks with Blackbaud,  it seems like it is going to be a headache to remove these addresses from the blacklist.
