Gift Entry

Options
We recently partnered with our school on a campaign.  The students sold t-shirts to raise money and all funds come to our foundation.

All the money was pooled together and we received one check from the school.  The students tracked who all the donations came from.  What is the best way to enter the donation?:

Donation from school and soft credit each individual since the check came from the school?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

  • Legally the donation came from the school (who wrote the check).  That's who gets the tax receipt.

There are two general schools of thought about how to enter it in RE.

    1) Hard credit the school and soft credit the individuals. But soft credits can add a layer of complexity that some orgs don't like dealing with because RE can't differentiate between spousal soft credits and soft credits like this (which is similar to donor advised funds).

    2) Hard credit the individual donors and have a gift attribute of "Name on check." This solves the soft credit problem, but can make it difficult producing accurate tax receipts/records.
