Appeal vs Proposal

Do any of you have any guidelines regarding when to enter an ask as an appeal and when to consider it a proposal? My basic assumption is that appeal is a solicitation that may involve personal follow up by a board member or member of my office, and a proposal is a larger ask that may require multiple moves. But as is often the case, "it depends" sometimes creeps into the scenario and it is hard to write policy around "it depends."


Do you have any tips on when to make something an appeal vs when to consider it a proposal? Or are the proposals all also coded with a "face to face" appeal in the record? This is the other workaround we have discussed so that the proposals we are working on stay in the appeals for appeals analysis.

    We don't currently have a policy for this either, unfortunately.  However, I would say keep it simple - if an ask needs to be tracked in more detail, record the ask as a proposal; if it is okay to track an ask at a high-level with minimal detail then record it as an assigned appeal.


    Adding a "Face-to-Face" appeal to constituent records when a proposal is being used to track an ask will end up being more work for you (or your database administrator), but if your organization primarily tracks solicitations through appeals this may be a necessary step.

  • This is a great question that is often asked in our office.  As a rule of thumb, we try to use a proposal for moves management/donor pipeline purposes.  For example, if their is any cultivating of the relationship prior to the ask; if the ask is personalized or has a specific proposal; or the gift requires unique stewardship actions/ follow up reporting we will create a proposal.  We use appeals for what we consider "mass asks" such as when we send out newsletters containing a reply device or direct mail letters/emails to large groups of constituents.
