Best Practice using Relationships > Education Question

Options
 I have a Raiser's Edge question: I would need some guidance or best practices on when to add information in the Relationship Education portion in RE. Are these field such as School Name, School Type, Campus, Date graduated, Class Of, Date left, Status etc.. only to be filled;

1. When a student graduated from our School ( CRESPI Carmelite) or when adding a new constituent like an Alumni Parent- meaning they graduated from our school.

2. Or is should we add this information for any donors who has a child in Crespi Carmelite even if they are not an Alumni Parent or they did not went to Crespi Carmelite HS?

Thank you,

  • Hi Nestor-

    It all depends upon your reporting needs. Certainly, you should create an educational record for your alumni because you have access to all of the necessary data, but to track or not track this information on non-alums is a personal preference. Gift officers might like to know a potential donor went to Yale and graduated 10 years ago, but acquiring that information short of asking each person in a survey will likely prove very difficult .
  • If I reading what you are asking and interpreting correctly -- you are asking if you should mark the Parent(s) of of your students/alums (attending or attended the school) with the Education relationship to the school.

    If that is what you are asking.  No is the answer.  The Education relationship is intended to reflect Your School as the Primary Alumni Information (checkbox) for Students and students who are no longer enrolled.

    If/when you add any other education relationships -- like the next school that a student/alum moved to -- that is still an Education Relationship but it is NOT primary (no checkbox).  As for the Parents -- some schools do make note or collect data on where parents have gone to school.  If the Parent DID go to your school, then they should already have a Primary Education/Alum Relationship on their record.  If the Did Not go to your school, any educational info you have on the parents are just that Education Relationships (no checkbox).

    That is how it is designed.  There would be mass confusion if you had every parent have a relationship to the school through an education relationship.
