Luminate Online vs. Luminate Beta--HELP please

Options
Hi Community,

Apologies if this thread has been started by someone else.  I couldn't find a simple answer to my question:

We've been using Luminate Beta for a few months now simply to send our monthly newsletter but can't seem to find the right resources to explain the differences between LO and Beta.  Am I correct that the lists in Beta are static and have to be created with each email since the data is not being updated by LO?

We've gone through a few KnowledgeBase articles only to be left more confused.

ANY advice or suggestions of article reading is appreciated.

  • Hello Lisa,

We have been using beta since it's been launched. We ran into a few issues that the support as finally corrected.

On the top of my head here are the differences I have observed between beta and LO :

    - Beta gives you the opportunity to create an email with drag and drop so you save time spent by an integrator.

    - LO gives you the opportunity to send email with an html that gives you way more possibilities but you need someone to create that html.

    - The stats are way more precise in LO than in Beta.

    - I can see the group of person that opened my email in LO but not in beta. I can even create a group with them in LO and filter them out of the next email. You cannot do that in beta.

What do you mean by static ? You could for example send a birthday card for every constituent on the day of their birthday with the list being updated everyday.

The way we use beta is maybe unconventionnal but it's because we have a lot of information that is on our CRM (PeopleSoft) that we don't upload to luminate.

So what we do is create a group in LO and then filter the list with that group.

"Lisa (aka Dazed and Confused)" : Hahahah I love that surname ! Don't feel alone, every day I have something unusual happening with Luminate ?
  • Loic,

Thanks so much for the reply.

So it sounds like LO can not "push" email lists to Beta and a list for our monthly enewsletter needs to be recreated each month?

Yes, I always feel "dazed and confused" when it comes to Beta!

  • It all depends on how your sync is done with your constituents and the newsletter subscribers.

For exemple, if you upload every new person that subscribed as a new constituent and attribute them to a group called for exemple newsletter-goup. (all of this can be automated)

Then in beta you just need one lists that filter with the group "newsletter-group". You don't need to create a new list every month. It will use the group to select the constituents to send the email to.

But like I said it depends on a lot of variables because we all use different workflow with luminate.

Lisa, just catching up on last week's digest and found your question. What you're defining here is precisely the reason we aren't yet able to use Beta at all. We use nearly 100% custom-created audience groups/lists generated out of our Blackbaud CRM (known here as Maven!) and uploaded to LO, and at this time (over a year into it), Beta does not allow custom-created groups to be brought over from LO. A huge disappointment to us, as we had initially been really excited to try out Beta, only to find that there was no use we could put it to (one of the few emails we send to an interest group list, as Beta allows, is our more-or-less-monthly newsletter, and my supervisor was way too nervous to send an email using untried technology, to essentially our entire database :-) )

We're still hoping that feature, the use of custom groups, is on the Beta development radar for ... sometime soon.

    Cheers,

  • Actually there's a way to make it work. We use group from LO to filter our Beta list. But there's a trick to make it work. You see in Beta to filter with a group, that group needs to be from a specific kind. I don't remember which one but there are only four accepted. I tried with all four and the only one not giving me any issue is the "interest opt-in groups".

So our workflow looks like this:
    1. Assign peoples in a group with the import tool (it could be done manually too)
    2. Change that group type to "Interest Opt-In groups"
    3. Go to Beta and create a new list
    4. Filter by group with the group created in LO
  • Thanks Loic!

I'll try that process in the coming months.  I'll also be on the LO/Teamraiser Roadmap call later in April, so perhaps I can pose some questions during the webinar.

On the Luminate Online roadmap call on April 23rd we'll talk about the update we're working on for Luminate Beta Email that will let you target native Luminate Online Groups: https://hello.blackbaud.com/10826-Roadmap-LOTR-WSEM.html  - it's coming soon.
  • That's a great news !
  • Thanks Kathryn,

I've already registered for the Roadmap call, so good to know.

    Happy Friday,

Kathryn, it was great to see in the Roadmap call slides that the use of custom lists would be implemented/made live as of this week - and indeed they are!

So now I have other formatting quesions around trying to create emails in Beta - can you help with who to direct these to? I'm imagining regular support folks are not going to be able to answer my questions, since they normally tell us they don't do coding support (and even though it's not possible yet to get to the HTML of emails in Beta, my questions are sort of/probably code-related.)

    Help? Thanks!
