Creating custom reports out of Raiser's Edge

Options
In looking at the discussion threads it seems to have been a few years since this question has come up and I am interested in the latest thinking on this. What are colleagues out there using to create custom reports these days? Crystal Reports, SSRS something better?

CR has been the old standard and they can be integrated into the reporting menu structure. I have created a few in the past but am wondering if that is still the way to go. Thoughts.....

  • From an analysis/reporting perspective we have started to do a lot with PowerBI - works really well and you can schedule automated report updates/refreshes.

Thanks Dennis. I'm thinking more of creating conventional reports where the canned reports or queries just don't cut it.

We're still using Crystal plenty. For analysis etc we are moving into Tableau but it's a slow process.

If you're self-hosted and you have the capabilities, I would certainly consider moving to SSRS and reporting off the back end whenever possible. Crystal is still there but I mean, they just changed the integrated version to Crystal XI, which is 11 years old, and they canned the Crystal support team and no longer offer support for it. So even though it's still there, if you can move on from it I would.

Thanks James. I think that is sound advice as Crystal is a bit old now and support is sketchy.

I wonder about RE:NXT and what the options are there? We are not on it but it may come in the future.

  • Would anyone here know if any of the RE reports can be scheduled? Or can it be done through a custom report through CR?

I believe the only way to schedule a RE report is through the add-on "Queue." Assuming it works correctly, you can schedule reports (including Custom Reports) to run on their own schedule.

  • Thank you!

I use Crystal Reports frequently.  And I find that Google provides a LOT of support for any questions I have regarding formulas, formatting, etc.

I still use Crystal Reports, but only when the need for something custom exists, which is not very often. When I started my current position they were building reports for the Boards personal giving and solicited giving by hand in word. I thought that was a ridiculous idea and built a custom in Crystal. It is not installed as a custom in Raiser's Edge, however. I update it in Crystal.
