For those hosted RE/FE customers, what are you doing for general network storage?

Options
We are going to move to a hosted environment soon for RE and FE and no longer have a need for our internal server, other then for network storage and backup. For those smaller shops (we have under 20 emploees) do you maintain a server for this purpose, or have you also moved your network storage to a cloud based solution? Or both? I am curious to hear anything good or bad about your solution.

Thanks,

  • Hi Dan,

A good as cloud storage has become, having some on-site capacity just seems like good sense (and management) to me. It's faster, cheaper, serves as a back-up if your external links die, etc. And in your case, it's virtually free anyway.

    My 2 cents.

  • I would just add, since you said you're a shop of 20, make sure your IT folks have the skills and capacity to back up your file server and protected it from the outside network. It sounds easy, but it depends upon so many things from your network topology to how current you keep operating system patches to how often you schedule backups (and how often you test your restore process to make sure your backups are valid and restorable), etc. Having an on-site file server is great, until the data is lost or stolen. Then it's worse than never having had one at all.
