Hello!

Wondering if you are planning on upgrading to 7.96 due to TLS 1.1

  • Hi!  We are currently on 7.93 and will be upgrading to 7.96.  We were on the road to upgrade already because we are moving to NXT but from what I can tell, you will need to upgrade because of TLS 1.1.

We also will be upgrading. IT is working on server needs at this point. Our understanding is updating RE is required, also.
  • We don't process credit cards - or store credit cards in RE, and use Luminate to do all that and we don't use RELO (we have some old import/export functionality)

Here is my question for you - with the upgrade what are you doing to prepare.

I've started looking at the Knowledgebase materials and my main concern is the phone numbers from old addresses (alternative/old/previous address) and spouse records that I think will all be duplicated onto Bio 1

Is there some pre-clean up that can be done so this does not end up being such an issue - or maybe I'm getting worked up about nothing

I mentioned the whole CC thing because it is not a PCI issue for us so why upgrade, but I do understand that we could be in jeopardy being able to communicate with other products - such as ResearchPoint, which we use from time to time

In any case any advise/thoughts you have about how you are getting the database ready for the update would be greatly appreciated

We are upgrading to 7.96, we just purchased a new server and are going to slowly migrate our database to the new server.  I am also concerned about the phones numbers, since when we started using RE it was suggested that we share phone numbers such as home, business.  I have been looking at the knowledgebases on the changes and have been trying to clean up our data so the transition hopefully will be painless.

    Hey Beth,

Any tips on how you are tackling this cleanup?

I have been creating queries to clean up any phone fields that do not have a phone number/email in it.  We use defaults and sometimes we forget to delete the fields if we do not have any information.  Also remove old phone types that we no longer use, like beeper. Checking relationships for blank phone fields.

  • Thanks Beth!

My concern is we have so many records with previous addresses and the same phone number, spouse records sharing phone numbers, etc.

Are you planning to set up a test database?

I'm typically swamped with donations, thank you letters and end-of-year reconciliation through mid-Jan. Then will be out of the office late January. So will have to do the bulk of this February and March. I contacted support and received a few references to KB articles. Would love to hear from folks about what works and doesn't work, and any recommendations as to how to make it as painless as possible. Thank you <3 Jill

I think if the phone number and phone type exactly match, they are deduplicated automatically as part of the upgrade process. If any do slip through the net because they have a different type, for example, I highly recommend using the Delete Phones plug-in to clean those up. I didn't do any phone cleaup prior to the upgrade, but afterwards I exported all our phones to Excel, sorted out which ones were duplicates and changed their type to "Delete", then used the plug-in to get rid of them all.

  • Thanks Alan!

I had another friend who has been through the upgrade mention this as well.

Right now I'm working with my IT department to set up a test database so I can get a better idea what we might be getting into
  • We will be upgrading also.  In KB 108203 it states: "For locally-installed Raiser’s Edge:
Users will need to upgrade to an upcoming 7.96 patch currently planned for release by the end of the year. If TLS 1.0 is disabled in your local environment and the compatible version of Raiser’s Edge is not installed, users will receive an error (Error: Unable to establish database connection) and be unable to log in."

This is regardless if you process credit cards or not.

  • Thanks for sharing this Alan, it sounds really helpful. I want to make sure I understand. When you export the phone numbers / emails / web addresses post-upgrade, do they have an Import ID or other key so that they can be easily imported as revised with "Delete" phone type?
  • Yes, phones have an import ID which can be exported through Export, but unfortunately not through Query which is a shame as they'd be more useful to me in a vertical list than in multiple columns across the page.
