Gift of Energy Credit

Options
Our organization just received a sizable energy credit from a donor who generates power from solar panels on her property. This gift will be able to pay the electric bill for our in-patient unit for about 6 months. The cost of which is in our general operating budget. We have two schools of thought in how to record this gift. The first, record it as a resticted gift in kind and the second is to record it as a restricted gift of "other".  The VP of philanthropy wants to make sure the gift is reported out, but our current operating reports do not show GIK or Other gifts. In the 20 years I have been in development I have never recorded an energy credit. Any thoughts?

  • How exciting! My school of throught would be to record it as a restricted gift in kind, where I'm from gifts in kind are things that get donated that you would otherwise pay for such as your electric bill; where gifts of other are things that if they weren't donated wouldn't be purchased by your organization, for example basketball tickets to auction off at an event.

As far as reporting it out, I'm not sure what kind of basis you would need to do this but my first thought is to set up a task reminder in an action to trigger you to run either a unique report that would capture this one gift OR now you would need to test this BUT if you're reports run off of queries you could adjust the query and use the "specific record" criteria to include this specific gift record .

Good luck! 6 months of electricity, what a great gift!
  • My inclination would be Gift-In-Kind.

At my last org, we had two Campaign Categories...Budget-Relieving and Non-Budget-Relieving.  The first was for gifts like this energy credit, that are in the budget; the second is for things not in the budget that we would either not have purchased or would have needed to raise specific money for.  We reported all budget-relieving gifts, including GIK.
