    Hi Theresa,

Can you give an example of what you mean by donor benefits?

  • Our organization is looking at providing our donors benefits based on giving levels.  For ex. if someone gives a single gift between $100 and $249.99 we want to assign them a level and give them perks.

It's always nice to recognize donors.

If you want to be able to view benefit details without opening each / multiple gift records, I would use a constituent attribute or an action. If it's something they would get with each gift, perhaps a gift attribute.

Note, however, and be aware of IRS regs, Revenue Procedure 17-58. For 2018, allowable: low cost benefits reflecting org's name/logo if they contribute miniumum of $54.50 and cost of all items does not exceed $10.90. For more substantial benefits, cumulative value of all benefits does not exceed $109 or 2% of the amount given, whichever is less. Gifts under $54.50, you apply 2% rule. This is info published at fundsvcs.org. John T is great about posting the stats as these figures may change annually.  Even plaques can hit these limits and in my experience the benefits don't mean as much to the donor as we want them to.

    gotcha!

    We do that

We have a giving group that has levels but the benefits are being invited to certain events so we are not giving them physcial items so we do not have to worry about IRS regs that JoAnn mentions

In any case we use attributes to track this with the level going into the comment section so when I'm trying to pull a list for an event that is X, Y, Z level I can pull just those donors

  • We were thinking about using the Membership module to track the levels and benefits.  For ex. for level 1 we might send a bookmark and then level 3 offer a discount on products, then a higher level we'd give an offer for a free magazine subscription to our magazine.

Also, how often do you run queries for this? Do you do it monthly, weekly? Do you do it for a calendar year, or a rolling period?

Any help with processes would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

While there are exceptons noted in the IRS regs regarding membership benefits, services / events for member only events per-person cost still needs to be within the 'low-cost articles' limits. If it's not something you've considered I would certainly review IRS publication 1771 and/or consult your auditor to be sure you're good with your benefits.

  • We have this, it is called "Friend of the Foundation" -- we just started the upgrade to NXT and now have the Membership module. I was hoping to get some insight from others if they use Membership module for managing this type of thing. Ours is run on a monthly basis, and people fall off if they haven't given $2k or up in a 12 month period.

Up to now, we've managed with attributes, but it is cumbersome, and the major gift officers have a hard time deciphering who is a Friend of the Foundation, and when they expire.

I'd love to hear from any people who have had success using the Membership module for something like this. thanks! Tracy

  • I've done two ways: running benefits through membership, and then running benefits through events when the benefit is directly related to something special (gifts to our annual baseball classic, etc.)  Both work well, and I use an attribute table to track:  Benefit received, and for tax purposes we also use Benefits declined.  Then I just run a query on a fairly regular basis to search for entries that aren't received or declined, and I know who is still waiting for their benefit.  Hope this helps.
