How to use the "Giving Score"

Options
Has anyone gotten any real use out of the Giving Score?  We submitted our data once back in 2012 when it was first introduced, but haven't bothered to do an update since then.  If you've gotten any real value from it, would you please share your experience.

Thanks!

  • We used it to analyze our mailings and found that the higher categories were actually more likely to give.

  • It's a quick and dirty score.  But I use it when pulling mailing lists.  Need 1000 more?  Add VIP.  Need to lose 500? Cut long-shots.  I have found that by making an effort to include VIP and Fan I am getting some response.
  • Exactly what I do.
  • We use it for mailings as well. Also about once a year or begining of a campaign, we will run it, then take the VIPs and do a full screening if we have not done one yet on them. Then take the full screening results to narrow done for some research to help feed our pipeline.

Since we haven't done any wealth screening, I do find the Giving Score useful. As others have noted, VIPs do seem to be more likely to give. My question is this - I try to run the Giving Score annually to capture any changes and to score new graduates. The instruction say that the data is updated, but what I've found is that it just adds a new Giving Score on the record.  Am I doing something wrong? How can I be sure that the score is being updated and not just adding a new record? We converted in 2014, so I have two years of updates and am about to add a third - I don't want my records to eventually have 10-12 Giving Scores attached ...

Running it again does just add another score record. Does not update existing. So, yes, running annually for 10-12 years will result in 10-12 scores plus any manual ratings that you add.
  • Thanks for the clarification. So if I want to use just the most recent score, how would I do that? Would I need to create a query that selects only those with associated date? Or should I do global delete before refreshing the score? Thanks in advance for your advice and best practices here.

Kim, We ran it several times when it first came out. I haven't run it for about 3 years now and off the top of my head can't think of anyone whose rating changed to test it.  I know we made some manual adds. If you just want one rating and can delete the system generated ones and leave any manuals, I say go for it.  Back then I knew the records that changed/were updated. Don't remember any longer.

I can see advantages to keeping several years of ratings to see/track changes in different directions.
  • I am running Giving Score for the first time and would like to see the data before uploading it to my database.  I am unable to actually open the results file I received and am unable to find any sample documentation.  I have "chatted" with customer support but they were not able to provide me with any additional information.  Can  anyone provide a snippet of a constituent record where the informaiton is located and looks like?

    Thanks,

    Sandy Ernst

Support should have been able to help with that. Disappointing.

The category displays at the bottom of the bio 1 screen, right below the Education button.  And a Ratings tab is also added to records. Screen shot is of that tab on my record. Shows the date ratings were done and category.  That's about it. Note, I'm only a VIP as I've been at the Y for a long time and made small gifts to annual campaign, not because I'm a closet millionaire.

You can see the blue VIP code at the bottom of page - that shows on each tab.

Don't think it's probably an option to see data without uploading it.

Hope this one comes through. Or I'll have to go back and search forum posts on attaching screen shots. LOL
