Reading manual useful for brand new user?

Options
I am re-entering the work force in the non-profit sector and I'd like to learn Raiser's Edge so I can go into interviews with solid knowledge of the software.  I'm forced to learn RE on my own since Blackbaud won't let me purchase training unless I'm working or volunteering for a non-profit that uses it.  Would reading the manual give me a good overview or is hands-on training a must?  There is also another book I found, 'Fundraising with the Raiser's Edge: A Non-Technical Guide', that users rave about.  Each book is about a 300 page investment of time, so I guess I'm looking for specific areas I should focus on?  Thank you!

  • Cool!

Go Blackbaud Community site that can hold large files (or could it be that I'm old(er) and remember the days that 1 MB would break everything in its path ;-)

    Lisette,

I guess it depends on what type of position/role you are trying to get and how you best learn

I learn best by doing. So when I first got training for RE it was the most grueling, mind numbing 2 hours of my life (ok maybe not that bad, but at the time it felt that way) and it was all meaningless until I got to play with the product in a real life situation

That said I did find a helpful RE7 for Beginners PDF that I really love - it is almost 7 MB or I'd upload it.

If you are interested PM me with your email and I can send it your way.

I also have that pdf and found it helpful.  I'll try uploading it here.

Thanks for providing this PDF - I'm in the final stages of moving over from etapestry and it's very good information to have!

    Thank you, Joanne

Thank you, Joanne! Was it really that complicated?  Is it any harder than learning Excel?  My ultimate goal is to be a Major Gifts Officer but I'm finding a lot positions write proposals, or do some kind of administrative work and require Raiser's Edge knowledge and/or experience.  It's just helpful to know in this field, especially for someone re-entering the work force with only volunteer work experience.  Thanks again.

Thanks so much, Barb!  I did find that manual on the Blackbaud site available for download.  Thank you for making it accessible here.  I hope it's not too dry!  I might go ahead and purchase the Bill Connors book that isn't as technical, 'Fundraising with RE: A Non-Technical Guide'.  I just hope I can feel like I can master RE without the real-life experience.  I appreciate your help.

  • I just recently went through it as I'm new in my position.  It's actually quite humorous :)

  • Gracie, I cannot thank you enough for breaking it down for me like you have.  This is incredibly useful.  I have worked with CRM databases in the past and I don't think I'll have too much trouble mastering it once I can actually experience it.  As others have stated, the larger problem for me will be retaining all of this technical know-how and recalling it in real-time.  It's so frustrating that they can't offer it to anyone who wants to train on it.  What a shame.  They're missing out on another way to make money so it's baffling to me.  Again, THANK YOU! I will refer to this as I begin the book.
  • Hi Lisette - you're most welcome! I share your frustration at not being able to get at the meat of the training without currently working for an RE-using organization. I'm also frustrated at not being able to access the "courses" offered for the Professional Certification without a "subscription", which hardly any small non-profits can afford - certainly not the one I work for at the present time. If I go off into the world of consulting, I'm really up the proverbial creek.

I think it would be a huge money-maker for Blackbaud if they would offer the courses within the sample database for people outside an RE organization. I'm paying for professional development courses at the local community college - I'd be happy to pay for RE courses myself if my organization wouldn't do so. Either way, Blackbaud spreads the word, gets more people using their products, and makes money. Sounds like a winning combination to me!
