Lisette,
I guess it depends on what type of position/role you are trying to get and how you best learn
I learn best by doing. So when I first got training for RE it was the most grueling, mind numbing 2 hours of my life (ok maybe not that bad, but at the time it felt that way) and it was all meaningless until I got to play with the product in a real life situation
That said I did find a helpful RE7 for Beginners PDF that I really love - it is almost 7 MB or I'd upload it.
If you are interested PM me with your email and I can send it your way.

Cool!
Go Blackbaud Community site that can hold large files (or could it be that I'm old(er) and remember the days that 1 MB would break everything in its path ;-)2 -

Joanne
Thank you, JoanneThank you, Joanne! Was it really that complicated? Is it any harder than learning Excel? My ultimate goal is to be a Major Gifts Officer but I'm finding a lot positions write proposals, or do some kind of administrative work and require Raiser's Edge knowledge and/or experience. It's just helpful to know in this field, especially for someone re-entering the work force with only volunteer work experience. Thanks again.

Thank you for making it accessible here. I hope it's not too dry! I might go ahead and purchase the Bill Connors book that isn't as technical, 'Fundraising with RE: A Non-Technical Guide'. I just hope I can feel like I can master RE without the real-life experience. I appreciate your help.

I just recently went through it as I'm new in my position. It's actually quite humorous

I started in fundraising 6 years ago at my current ogranization and had never heard of Raiser's Edge before my first day as a temp. I got some very general instruction on gift entry from someone who didn't really know how to do it, and started the very first day catching up on the backlog of gifts from the year-end appeal that had been accumulating in the month since my predecessor left.
I think RE is a little like English (I have been teaching ESL for many years) - it's not that hard to figure out and use the progrma/language at a very basic, tourist kind of level. But it takes quite a lot to really make it jump through hoops. For the major gifts officer position, I think you need a basic understanding of how things like gift entry and Mail work and where to find information (including how to run Reports and Queries), but you really need some serious training on Actions, the Prospect module if used, and some of the lesser-known things like Constituent Profiles or Ratings. I was lucky enough to get training (later, once I had a pretty good grasp of the basics!) from Ed Hohlbein, who presents at bbcon with Bill Connors. I haven't read Bill's book, but I've seen him present and I think it would be a great resource for understanding what RE can do, even if you can't use it yet.
Another resource for the absolute beginner is YouTube - there are a handful of videos out there addressing various topics. And much as I'd like to claim (for professional reasons) that using RE is different and requires specialized skills that command higher pay ;-) , my own experience is that if you can handle some other database, you can probably handle RE. I came out of admissions and registrations, with a long gap of living overseas and not doing any data work at all. Grasping the basics of RE was a piece of cake, but I didn't really fall in love till I grasped the intricacies, aka the possibilities.7 -
Gracie, I cannot thank you enough for breaking it down for me like you have. This is incredibly useful. I have worked with CRM databases in the past and I don't think I'll have too much trouble mastering it once I can actually experience it. As others have stated, the larger problem for me will be retaining all of this technical know-how and recalling it in real-time. It's so frustrating that they can't offer it to anyone who wants to train on it. What a shame. They're missing out on another way to make money so it's baffling to me. Again, THANK YOU! I will refer to this as I begin the book.0

Hi Lisette - you're most welcome! I share your frustration at not being able to get at the meat of the training without currently working for an RE-using organization. I'm also frustrated at not being able to access the "courses" offered for the Professional Certification without a "subscription", which hardly any small non-profits can afford - certainly not the one I work for at the present time. If I go off into the world of consulting, I'm really up the proverbial creek.
I think it would be a huge money-maker for Blackbaud if they would offer the courses within the sample database for people outside an RE organization. I'm paying for professional development courses at the local community college - I'd be happy to pay for RE courses myself if my organization wouldn't do so. Either way, Blackbaud spreads the word, gets more people using their products, and makes money. Sounds like a winning combination to me!2
