Good morning, Online Express Community!

I wanted to post a quick introduction this morning, since you'll be reading more from me in the coming weeks. My name is Tiffany Getch and I am part of the Onboarding and Adoption team here at Blackbaud- specifically for Online Express! In the next few days, I'll be posting some exciting news; but in the meantime, I was hoping to get to know you all a bit better.

Question for today: What are three things you wished you had known when getting started with Online Express?
These wishes can be about what it takes to get set up, specific functionality steps that were easier to understand or even knowing where to go when you had a question- any and all wishes are welcome! (Disclaimer: These wishes will not be granted by a genie and are for icebreaker purposes only)

Looking foward to reading your comments below- and stay tuned for more exciting information in the next few days!

  • Hello!

    My wishes below:

#1: you could post to one than one fund

#2: you could collect a billing and shipping address

#3: you didn't have to collect registration information on everyone!  It's nice to know but for a 5000+ person ticketed event we don't always need to know.
  • Hi Meghann- great to meet you!

Thanks so much for responding- would you say that these three items here are things that would have made an impact in your decision to use Online Express? Or would this have been good to know as you first started creating your forms, etc.?
  • 3 Online Express Wishes

Wish 1:  I wish I could have acutally seen or used a 'sandbox' Online Express BEFORE we were live and had to start using it. (I looked for classes and googled like a mad woman, but couldn't find out how hard or easy it would be to learn or begin to use it. The worst part was how stressful it was knowing my company needed donation pages up and running in very short time and having almost no knowledge of the program I was going to have to master like yesterday until after we were live. It was extremely frustrating. It wasn't as diffficult as I had imagined since it has so few customizable options, but still, it didn't have to be like that.)

Wish 2: I wish we knew BEFORE we signed up for anything that we could NOT use a third party tracking pixel with the donation forms and we could not embed it into the Thank You page either. (Before we decided to go with Blackbaud and one of the reasons for choosing it was to be able to track traffic from digital ads that go to the donation page, then leave the donation page before donating, go to other pages on our site, and then actually donate. Without the tracking pixel, we can't do that. We were told that the tracking pixel would be compatible before we signed up, but once we signed up and were able to begin using the system, we found out that it is not "yet" an available option, but we could suggest it for others to vote on it and maybe in the future it might become an option. Good news is we're almost at the end of the contract for the tracking pixel we cannot use. :/ )

Wish 3: I wish I knew how the HTML would interact with webdesign templates. Some templates it adapts to easily and others not. It's weird little things like the colors not working as what you input in Online Express because of some issue in the code integration. Also I wish there were more customizable options like the arrows or size of the drop down boxes.
  • Hi Stephanie-

Great feedback! It sounds like you took some initiative on learning how to use Online Express- you might be interested in attending our new Adoption Program (announcement post pending!) next week. We'll be covering online donation forms, email marketing and planning an event- best practices AND how-to's. Might be a bit late to the party, but the information could still be helpful!

I had a lot of the same frustrations - here's how I'm working around the tracking issue. I don't work for these guys, I'm just excited that I've got it all to work right!!
I've purchased a great workaround from www.smartthing.org/areas/online-express/ for 300GBP - easy to install, and works like a charm for GA, Adwords and Facebook Pixel tracking. You just cut and paste the code below the OLX donation form code on your website and off it goes!
They also have a great tool that allows you to super easily add email correspondence into RE 7 or RE NXT with the click of a button - well worth the money for my team. Check it out - nice people and super helpful.

Wish 1:  I wish we knew more about how to transition from Net Community to Online Express.  We purchased NXT and with it came Online Express.  We are still going through the transition period.  Wish we had a litle bit more support and clear directions as to how to transition smoothly and what to expect.

Wish 2:  Wish we knew how easy and user friendly Online Express is!  it really is easy once you get in there!

Wish 3:  Wish I knew or had the ability to send to email addresses that are not already in RE.  (since you have to query the emails)  My idea here is to create a dummy account with all of the emails!

Hi Meghann- great to meet you!

Thanks so much for responding- would you say that these three items here are things that would have made an impact in your decision to use Online Express? Or would this have been good to know as you first started creating your forms, etc.?

It would have been nice to know when we started creating our forms.  Or at least wish that support could have answered these questions better for me.  When we first started creating our forms it seemed like I was chatting with support multiple times a day and every question I asked it seemed like I was the first person to ever ask it.  It was a little frustrating, especially being completely new to everything Blackbaud.

  • Hi Beth- thank you for the feedback on your experience transitioning from Net Community to Online Express. While it sounds like you had a few bumps, I'm happy to hear that you find Online Express user friendly! You also have a great tip on how to manage those email addresses outside of RE- thanks so much for sharing!
  • My number one thing I would like to have known (and what is keeping me from using the forms in Online Express) is that you cannot limit the number of months an individual can select to pay off a pledge.  This is especially bothersome as we hold Annual Fund Campaigns each year and if someone pledges $5000 for a gift year, the system will give them 5 years or so to pay it off.

Individuals should also have the option to select what types of emails they want to opt out of and along the same lines, there needs to be a way to mark a spouse as not wanting to receive emails in RE.

Other than that, I like it

    Kate

  • Faith Murray:

    My three wishes:

    1) You can include the Tribute feature on the donation page without being required to create a new constituent record for tributees. (Who wants hundreds of already-dead non-donors added to your database?)

    2) You can convert an individual donor/registrant to an organization when creating a new record in OLX, and vice-versa. (We have had numerous people fill out their organization gifts as individuals, and you can't change it before downloading the gift. Which means you then have to delete the false individual record, create a new organization record, and manually transfer the gift information.)

    3) That clicking the Opt-out button would take you to a selection menu to opt out of certain types of email communications, rather than automatically opting out of all of them. Some people enjoy receiving our newsletters, but don't want e-solicitations. With OLX, it's all or nothing, and it's a permanent deal.

    Hi Faith,

We are just switching to OLX, so I'm trying to get some ideas before our forms go live, but I have a question about your second issue.  This may be specific to the way you process gifts, but could you not just let the gift get committed as an individual record and then convert the record to an organization record once it is in RE?  It seems like that might be easier than deleting and transfering the gift info.

  • Hmmm.....

    1.  That the easy social share we were promised isn't really available to email appeals -- which was the primary thing we wanted.

    2.  I 2nd the comment about how the donation page code interacts with the html page where it is embedded.

    3.  That I didn't have to repaste the embedded code every time I change something in OLX  (Is that true?)

    4. How frustrating it would be to unable to send to emails that are not in the database.

  • Hi Tovi-

Thanks for the feedback. While I can't specifically address the HTML issues that have been mentioned, I can say with certainty that any changes you make to a form will automatically update on your page once you've embeded your code. You might need to refresh your page, but that code is dynamic, meaning you don't need to copy and re-paste every time you make changes.

I hope that's a small win for you on a Friday afternoon at 4pm!

    Hi Tiffany,

I wish we had known probably more than 3 things, but here are the first three that came to mind:

#1: inability to edit html for Thank You emails generated from donation form submissions

#2: inability to limit # of pledge installments on the donation form; our annual fund donors only have up to 12 months (usually more like 10 months) but they are shown higher numbers when they are filling out the form based on their pledge amount and the minimum installment amount that we set.

#3: limitation on what registration fields can be included on event registration forms

Also, the fact that we cannot translate all fields and inserted merged fields into other languages (e.g. Spanish) has been a challenge for us and our donor pool.

    Thanks!

    Linda

This is a really great post and I agree with all three points, especially #2. This has caused a lot of extra work for me as we prepare for our largest event; a luncheon for 2,300 people!

    My three wishes . . .

    1. That I  can't send to emails not in database,

    2. That I can't put social media links that allow person to easily post to their own media pages (can only put links to our social media, but want them to easily share the message)

    3. That I can't save blank templates of e-news designs, instead of starting fresh or from a previous message and delete previous stuff.

We are just getting started with Online Express donation forms....but I still have several wishes (can they be granted by the end of April?!!)  :)

    1. I wish that when downloading transactions, the batch information that the donation is going into would be visible on that page (since it defaults back to creating a new batch for every donation whenever I leave that page).Since we keep all of credit card donations for 1 day in a single batch and separate pledges into a different batch, I can be switching back and forth between batches and would like to see the batch info BEFORE I process the donation into a batch.

    2. I wish that when linking records/processing transactions, Online Express did not trigger a 5 digit zip as an "update to process" if that 5-digit zip matches the 5 digit portion of our 9-digit zip code already in RE. This requires extra clicks for EVERY donor because I don't want to replace that info.

    3. I wish that when linking records/processing transactions, Online Express could identify that a phone number or an email is already in the record and does not require and "update to process" even though it has a different Type (may be called 'Home' or 'Cell Hers' instead of just "Cell" - but it is the exact same number or email address).

AND I wish that when there is a new phone number or email address to add, I could choose what Type I would like it to be (not just the 1 type that I have to choose as a default).

    4. (Please ignore the fact that I cannot count to 3).  I wish that I could choose MULTIPLE installment dates for a pledge - based on the payment type selected!!!! We use the 20th of the month for our credit cards, the 25th of the month for direct debit and the 31st(last day of the month) for all pledges to be paid by check. But I am forced to choose only 1 installment date - which means the other communicate incorrectly to our donors.

    Thanks!

    1) We have around 175 countries configurations in our database. Many of the formats of the countries (around 75 of those) are as follows:

    Address Lines

    Postcode City

    Country

When I did the original set up it was not critical if I selected the available fields for the United Kingdom or the United States. I defaulted to the United States. This was an issue when receiving credit card donations from countries like China. Because I had selected the United States it was making the State field be required for the donation even though it wasn't one of the available fields for that country in configuration. Several frustrated donors later we got to the bottom of it and I updated all of the countries.

The last two items are more of a wish list for OLX.

    2) I learned the hard way that the Addressee/Salutation options did not work the same as RE when I saw that I had three options I was thrilled I thought this was going to work better than RE. They worked great for my test case and then a major email went out with Dear ,. So in the end not better.

    3) I would love to be able to name my own appeals and ID's that go onto the records when I select "Add this data to RE" instead of the generic BBOX and the subject line which is often vague dispite my requests.

    Thanks Tiffany!

Elizabeth, I'd love to know more about what you learned about configuring countries. I'm having the hardest time figuring this out and it's so time confusing. Do you default to UK now and then rearrange fields based on country? I lost several possible donors yesterday alone during our Day of Giving. Also, I definitely agree with your #3 point--that's long been a frustration, and I'm not sure why it doesn't at least pull in the subject line.

  • Question for today: What are three things you wished you had known when getting started with Online Express?

I know this was from awhile ago, but my search today brought this up and wondering if any solutions have been found? The wish was:
I wish you could convert an individual donor/registrant to an organization when creating a new record in OLX, and vice-versa. (We have had numerous people fill out their organization gifts as individuals, and you can't change it before downloading the gift. Which means you then have to delete the false individual record, create a new organization record, and manually transfer the gift information.)

    I also agreed with these:

*You didn't have to collect registration information on everyone!
*Wish I had the ability to send to email addresses that are not already in RE.
*Wish you could include the Tribute feature on the donation page without being required to create a new constituent record for tributees.
*Wish that clicking the Opt-out button would take you to a selection menu to opt out of certain types of email communications, rather than automatically opting out of all of them.

Also, one I didn't see that is a big one for us (and is preventing us from using the Email Marketing to it's full potential) - I wish you could select organization contacts to email to based on contact type instead of relationship. Seems like it would make more sense since that is how they are included in exports and other database modules.
