Planned Gifts without an amount

How do others record a planned gift (using the Planned Gift Module) when you do not know the expected amount of the planned gift?

  • We record the gift amount as $0.00. Having a $0 value planned gift doesn't preclude future gifts being linked to it.

Also, are you talking about someone announcing their intent to leave you in their estate planning, or are you talking about receiving notification of a planned gift after the donor has passed? Those two different situations are handled differently at our org, but only insofar that they each have a specific Planned Gift Status applied to them.
  • Thank you Ryan, to clarify these are donors that have informed us of their intent to leave us in their estate planning.  I have come across a percentage of the estate but do not know the value of the entire estate.

Like Ryan said, we enter planned gifts of unknown amounts as $0.00.  Prior to getting the PG module the process was to enter planned gifts as pledges in the amount of $1,000.  This has caused some headaches moving forward because I have all of these outstanding pledges in the amount of $1,000 and I don't know whether or not they need to be written off or if we're still expecting something.  I did transfer most of them over into the PG module at $0.00 if I had documentation from the constituent.
