Divorces in RE

Options
Ok folks, I am looking to see if there is anyway to see the following:

If Bob and Mary get divorced but are still living at the same address or have not yet shared a new address we divorce them on the record but do not split the record (This is how it's been done years before me).

Now say Mary gets remarried and we create her and her new spouses record is their any way to see that she already exists on Bobs record?

I'm not sure if that makes sense, but basically I have been finding so many records where duplicates exist and the duplicate report is overwhelming because it was almost never done in the past... any suggestions?

Thanks!

If by 'divorce them on the record' you mean you uncheck the spouse button it does limit search abilities. When Mary is a spouse her name can be found in searches. When the spouse link is broken (in my experience anyway) there is no result when searching for the non-constituent spouse.

When we 'divorce' constituents, if the non-constituent has a relationship with the org we will create use the "add this individual as a constituent" option and create a record for them.  Then they are in the system and can be found for a situation like you described of getting remarried and new spouse can be added as relationship.

If you are finding duplicate records, is it finding the relationship?  I'm thinking duplicate searches tend to just look at constituent records, not relationships.  I may be wrong on that.

Gotcha, you might be right on the duplicate report, I am getting around to maintenance and may just be overwhelmed in general, hah. I think we will need to start making the non constituent spouse a record to address the problem.

    Thanks so much!

  • Depending on the way you separate spouses, make sure the "Automatically soft credit this individual for gifts" is correct on the Relationship record, General 2 tab, lower right. One of the ways to separate spouses (perhaps uncheck spouse?) leaves the automatic soft credit intact. In our system deceased people were inadvertently being soft credited for gifts from their surviving spouses.

That's a good point, thank you!
