Processing Direct Debits

Options
Good afternoon! Has anyone been able to successfully prrocess direct debits via BBMS from an EFT batch in Raiser's Edge.  Our organization was looking to process these transactions this month but have run into a smag with the Validation Error of INVALID  routing number.  Not sure whether to use donor checking routing number or bank ACH rounting number. Does anyone have any pointers?

  • Hi Shameeka,

I just ran into this same issue. We just finished up our employee giving campaign where we had quite a few transactions processed through Online Express. When processing the EFT Transmission file I would get the same message, Invalid Routing Number or Account Number. Blackbaud support stated it was because I did not have supervisor rights when attempting to process the transaction. I'm sure 100% convinced that was the issue as I've been able to process direct debits in the past. I would first check the security assigned to your account. Make sure you have supervisor rights and attempt to process again. You'll need both the routing and account # for it process.

    Hope this helps,

    -John
  • Hi John and thanks so much for responding! I have supervisor rights but our Data Entry person does not have supervisor rights. I will definitely check into it. Thanks so much!

    Have a wonderful afternoon,

You're very welcome! That's probably the reason. Hopefully an easy fix!

Hello Shameeka! You will want to use the bank ACH routing number. This does come up sometimes if using the donor's check routing number or if the number was incorrectly entered. Try the ACH routing number and if that still doesn't work, let us know!

  • Hi Brittni! Thanks for reaching out to me. Yesterday we updated the constituent record to include the bank ACH routing number and the transactions went through today. YEAH!!! I believed that was the issue but the knowledgebase information and support did not specifically point us in that direction.  I appreciate all of the feedback.

And reminder - it'll take 24 hours to process, you'll never get an auth code, and if it DOESN'T go thru (like if they don't have anough money or the acct number was wrong) you won't know for days.  Direct Debits are not for the faint hearted.....

We've had the same issue, and I currently have a donor whose recurring direct debit still will not go through. Our issue is the 8-digit data entry field. That said, is the ACH routing number different than the routing number the donor provided from his checking account, which is 9-digits long? I'm so frustrated, and I really don't want to have to call this donor for a 3rd time about this... Thanks everyone!

  • Good evening! The ach number can be found on the
financial institution website.  Typically, it is different
from the donor checking account.  The ACH transaction is for
wire transfer versus checking account payments. Normally you would
enter the donor routing number but that did not work for BB
Merchant Services. I would assume the routing information depends
on the payment processor. Hope this helps!

I don't think the routing # should change based on the processor.  It's the banks #.  Yes, on checks/accounts there are 9 digits. In RE, you drop the last digit. We use BBPS and have had no problem after initally getting the transmission file set correctly.  It was years ago but I know we had to work with support to get some little detail set for our files to go to the bank.
  • Thanks JoAnn for this helpful insight. I will consider this if we run into any issues in the future. S
  • Thank you all for your insights and responses. We never got the direct debit to work, and our donor decided to switch to a credit card.
