Increasing a Direct Debit

Options
Many charities have switched to Direct Debit becuase they are then able (with the donors consent) to increase the amount of the regular payment themselves, saving the donor hassle and ensuring it actually happens.

If someone sets up a direct debit via online express is it possible for us to do this? If so how?

    Hi Matt!

Just to be sure I am on the same page...you are asking if you can change the gift amount for a direct debit that is submitted via Online Express before initially processing it? And then also update future payments if it is a recurring transaction?

Direct Debits are not charged when setup on Online Express forms until you add them to a Raiser's Edge batch and the process them with your merchant. Because of this you can change the amount if the donor would like to increase  or adjust it. If you are looking at recurring gifts you can change the amount at anytime for direct debits as well as credit card payments. If this is what you are looking for, let me know and I can send more info!

    Hi Brittni,

Thanks for your answer and apologies for the slow reply.I think I was a bit confused about what OnEx actually does thinking it would work more like how Just Giving does things wherebythey do the whole thing.

[For the benefit of anyone else reading that is similarly clueless as I was, it doesn't. What OnEx does is collect the information that populates the fields that an agency, Bacs or bank need for you to process regular direct debits. So you'll need to find another supplier/merchant to do this for you if you're not already set up to received Direct Debits.]

So yes, I think you are on the same page, and in some way the situation you explain above means the question I was asking is the wrong one, but nevertheless I'd be interested hearing more about what you do as we are (now!) looking for a merchant to help us with this stuff and I'd be interested to know what kind of things to look for, ask etc. and what you do with the Direct Debits you have.

    Thanks

    Matt
