"No Welcome Series" query

Options
Hi Community,

I'm looking for some input. We were under the impression that a new online donor would NOT receive our Welcomes Series since our final email in that series asks the constituent to become a monthly donor.  Asking a donor to give again within a two or three week span is not our goal.   I'm trying to figure out or find resources to create a Query to suppress new online donors from our Welcome Series.  I'm unsure how to search for this information.

Thanks,

Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

You can create a Query to grab anyone who has made a donation, use that to build a dynamic Group, and then set that Group as a "Do Not Email" audience in your Welcome Series. That way, no one who has ever made a donation will receive the message.

Here's the path to go down:
Data Management > Query > Create a new Query .... set up a query using: Transaction Information > Lifetime Amount "is not blank"

Save it.... then "Use Query" to create a dynamic Group.  That Group can then be set as a "Do Not Email" audience in any or all of your Welcome Series messages.

I hope that helps point you in the right direction!

  • Hi Jon,

Thanks.  I'll follow your directions and see what happens.

  • Lisa, check this discussion thread for suppress welcome series constituents.
  • Creating a group from a query is a great idea! But then you should ask them to do something else instead of becoming a donor. Some sort of social media action or become a volunteer. That way they still get your second WS message.

You can use conditional content with that created group to speak directly to the constituents that already donated and swap that content out with something like the above or what makes sense for your org.

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Romany,

That's not quite what I was asking, but thanks for sending.

    Hi Phil,

Great idea, but we are novices with Luminate, just graduating from the Go! program in April.  To be honest, we really haven't had a great experience with learning Luminate and have been stumped on numerous occasions with various inquiries.  I'll be looking into webinars and other resources to teach myself  more about Queries and conditional content, like you mention above.  I would love to be able to figure out how to send those new donors the first two emails in our Welcomes Series (which include inviting them to "Get Involved" by volunteering or running a Food Drive") but not the third email, which asks them to become a monthly donor.

    Thanks,

    Lisa

    Hi Jon,

Looks like there were zeros in the "Lifetime Amount" fields in some of the records of those who have not donated.  Not sure why Luminate put them there, so I think if I change the field clause to "greater than or equal" to $0, that should give me any new online donors which will be added to the New Welcome Series Group.  Does that sound correct to you?

    Lisa

  • Hey Lisa... if you follow my path to setup that Query Group (the donors).. you would simply only add that Group to the 3rd Message's "Do Not Email" audience (not at the Campaign level). That way, they would still get the first two, but not the 3rd which asks for the donation. Make sense?

    Jon,

I thnk I'm confusing myself with the query clauses.  I realized my last post would not collect the data I seek.  I don't think using the transaction amount without the date gathers the new donors.  If  an individual has never donated to us (whether or not already in Luminate), I want that individual to be included in the No Welcome Series Query and then Group.  After I tackle that, I'll add that Group to the Suppression List of the 3rd email as you suggest above.

    Thanks for your help,

    Lisa

  • Yea, there is a learning curve for sure Lisa.

Why don't you use Donor status?

    Query name:

    Donor Status equal to Donor

    (System Donor Status equal Donor

OR System Donor Status equals Unknown

OR System Donor status equals Indirect Donor)

Those are the three status' a donor can be in.

Then use that group to suppress all donors from the third send.

    Jon,

If I use the First Transaction Date falls after today, that should pull the new donors into the Group I need.  Sound right?

    Phil,

The goal is to capture just the new donors when they give their first gift, so it doesn't matter what they are coded, but see my latest post to Jon as I think that may collect the new donors I need.

    Lisa

  • I see, that makes sense too.

I guess it depends on when your welcome series goes out. Is it once a week or every day?

First Transaction Date on or before today right? Otherwise you would still have same issue. Transaction date after today would be a day too late. You can always run the query to make sure you have the correct results.

Our Welcome Series goes out weekly on Tuesdays.  First Transaction Date AFTER today.  I'm hoping that does the trick.  I'll use this query to create a Group that is suppressed from our third email in our Welcome Series.

Donations are slow right now, so if any do come in today, I'll manually remove them from the Welcome Series.   And just thought also that I can manually remove any new donor from receiving the third email who is already in the queue to receive the Series.

    Thanks for your insight.

    Lisa

    HI Lisa,

If you do a query for donations after today, you'll be looking for donations that happen in the future. Before today will give you yesterday's donations and later.

We at Blackbaud University have a great Welcome Series class if you need more help with your Welcome Series strategy. If you need help with Query and query groups, we cover it as part of our Data Analysis 1 class. The Basics of Constituent Management eLearning also touches on query and groups.

    Hi Allison,

Thanks for the information regarding the Welcome Series.  I reviewed the Basics of Constituent Management and have registered for Luminate Online: Fundamentals--Overview and Managing Constituents.  I'm hoping to gain a better understanding of Queries in the Data Analysis 1 class (when I get to it) as I'm still unclear of the differentiation between Groups and Queries.
