If you use Query Lists PLEASE read this

Hello all,

Just realized that when you use a Dynamic Query in a new Query List, the Dynamic Query will not be renewed (if will produce the results from the last time you ran that query). When you use a Dynamic Query in a Reports, Exports, or one of the Mail modules, the Dynamic Query will be refreshed automatically. This is not the case in Query List. You must open the Dynamic query and run it before adding it to the query list. I thought you'd want to know this if you are reusing Dynamic Queries in Query lists.

I confirmed this with tech support and asked them to add to the Knowledgebase article on Dynamic Queries.

I never thought about it and would have assumed the dynamic query would run normally, had I not read this--but it totally makes sense. I noticed recently that I can't open the Properties window of a Query List, for example, and see which query it was based on. Now I see it's because it's not meant to. It generates its static keys the first time it runs and then totally "forgets" where it came from.

  • The Query List itself is a static query but I
assumed it would handle Dynamic Queries in the same way other areas
in RE handle them (Dynamic queries are automatically refreshed it
you use them in Report, Export or one of the Mail parameter files).
This is not the case in Query List. I thought I share this with
others so that you won’t be caught off guard!

  • Thanks Lauren,

We've recently begun to use Query Lists more in our organization...and like what we can do with them.

What you, Daniel, and support say all makes sense when you "slow down" and think about it...unfortunately we are often rushing to get tasks done.

    Thanks for the reminder!
  • Yes - you have to consider a query list to be similar to a merged query of 2 dynamic queries where it becomes static.
  •  They're really helpful to use for email lists in Online Express. After I build my dynamic query i can save it as a query list and add or remove anyone I want from the list.

  • I agree.
  • I would use these, too.
