Bequest Intentions

I was wondering if there was a standard practice for entering in RE bequest intentions.

  • This depends on whether or not you have the bequest module.

If yes, what we do is this:

Add a planned gift with $0 as the value (unless you know exactly what the donor is giving you), and then in Gift Status we pick whichever of these options makes sense (these are user defined fields, but I'm not sure what the default set is):

Inquiry - req. info about planned giving

Notified - planned gift intention rec'd

We have a few more statuses than that, but they are all for stages of a planned gift once the donor has passed.

I do not believe we have this module, does it cost exra?

  • I can't speak to the cost. It does if you're using RE7, but I'm not sure if it does if you're using NXT, and of course the cost depends on the size of your database and that sort of thing.

You can verify whether or not you have the module by creating a test gift on a record. In the Gift Type dropdown, if you have the option of "Planned Gift," then you do have the module. If you don't, then you don't have it.
  • Be careful with this - security options can make planned gift not show in your drop down even if you do have it. I would do this under a supervisor login to be sure.

    Good call!

we do not have this option in our organization

I was wondering if there was a standard practice for entering in RE bequest intentions.

We do not have the planning giving module, we enter the bequest intentions in attributes, using a drop down menu for how the gift will be made thru i.e, insurance, will, etc, then use comments for how to list their names and the date for when we received the notification.  We also use the media tab to include any document that we might receive.

  • We use RE 7.93 and do not have the Planned Giving module. However we have the Prospect module.

We use an attribute for donors who say they have included Yosemite Conservancy in their estate plans.  We add a 'legacy society' Add/Sal to track how the donor would like to be remembered.  When we receive irrevocable documentation (most commonly provided after the donor has passed away), we create a proposal to track the progress of the gift.
  • We do not have the bequest module.  We enter it as a proposal in the prospect tab (we have a proposal type of bequest intention).  That way we can also track actions as well.  We didn't want the bequest intention to fall through the cracks and wanted to have it somewhere in the constituent record, since it cannot be entered as a pledge.

  • We do not have the bequest module either, and so what we do is enter them as a pledge, but with a gift subtype of planned gift so that they can either be included or excluded from reports, queries, etc. as we want them to be.  The installment date is set up as a, very subjective, best guess, with just one installment expected.
