Querying on Packages - two types in a gift query

Options
Hi Community! I am hoping you can answer this question for me!

In  a gift query there are two 'package' categories that you can search on. one is directly under appeals and the other is on its own. Can anyone enlighten me as to the difference between these two and why they give completely different results?

Thank you in advance! Carley.

  • Yeah, this one is a bit confusing, but simple once you consider where in the hierarchy these elements exist.

1.) Package nested within the Appeal tree

This set of Package items relates to appeals. So let's say you query on package ID using this set. What you're asking RE is, "Please give me any gift related to an Appeal which has this package associated with it." So if I've got three appeals with the package "Ticket Sale," querying using this field will give me any gift associated with any of those three appeals. It's not just going to give me the ones with "Ticket Sale."

In other words, this is only to be used if you're trying to identify which appeals you want to get gifts from. This is not intuitive, and I don't think I've ever actually used this field.

    2.) Package unnested

This does what you would expect it to - it gives you gifts that match whatever you dial in here. So if you use Package ID within this menu, what you're asking RE is, "Please give me any gifts with the following Package ID." So in our case of "Ticket Sale," this will give you any gifts with that specific pacakge, regardless of which appeal it's associated with.

So, if you want to find gifts with a specific appeal and a specific package, you have to query on Appeal ID from within the Appeal tree, and Package ID from within the standalone Package tree, not the one nested under Appeal.
  • Ryan, that's awesome! Thank you so much for explaining that!
