Advocacy Petitions

First question -- Is Luminate Advocacy the same as the Advocacy tool in Luminate Online or am I posting to a different product discussion?

Main question -- how are people handling advocacy petitions? There's an earlier discussion but it's about Convio from 2013. Would like to get some more current LO feedback.

  • Hi Kim!

Yes, Luminate Advocacy is the same thing as the Advocacy tool in Luminate. Organizations can use this tool to create online petitions, call alerts and letter to the editor campaigns. I would love for other organizations to chime in and share some of thier strategies and how they use the tool and examples of alerts and petitions. Organizations use the advocacy tool to advocate for their issue like protecting the Chesapeake Bay. You can target elected officials at all levels or create custome targets and target decision makers who aren't necessarily elected officials.

I also want to make sure to connect you with your Customer Success Manager, Liz Copeland. Liz can make sure you are receiving the training and support that you need. As well as discuss ways and situations you would use the Luminate Advocacy tool.

In the meantime - there is a Luminate Advocacy training in Blackbaud University's Luminate Curriculum. You can subscribe to the Lumunite Advocacy news blog. Check out the Luminate Advocacy help file section. And don't forget about our blog NPEngage - we have a whole advocacy stratgey series.

    Thanks!

What we do for advocacy petitions is set the letter to be uneditable. You can also customize the text of the button in step 11, (customize Take Action page) so that the "Send button label" says "sign the petition" Also if we prefer to deliver the message all at once with just a list of names, we create a custom Target that has an in-house email address but the name and address of the petition recipient, so we can download the list of action takers when we are done collecting names. I hope this is helpful! i am curious how others do this.

Thanks much! We would like to show signers' names on the petition web page. Any way to do this?

Thanks Caroline! Yes, I know Liz. Thanks for the reminder. We're still in the final site creation phase so I'm buried with the developers for the most part now. We've had the most basic Advocacy training. Thanks for the additional links!

Just to clarify--If you enter an in-house email address as a custom target, will that email address receive a message every time someone signs the petition? Or do you have to change a setting to be able to do a one-time download of the action taker list?

The custom target will receive an email message with each submission, so we have a gmail account setup for just this purpose, so it can receive thousands of emails and not clutter anyone's personal email. You can do a letter download anytime you want. After submissions are received you will see a "download letters" link in the "action" column on the list of alerts when you access "action alerts" in the advocacy menu.

I am not sure if there is a way to automatically display signers on the petition page.

Kim, you can also build a Pagebuilder page and embed a survey on the page and mock it up like it is a petition. Population Connection chose this method. http://zpg.convio.net/site/PageNavigator/Thank_Barbara_Boxer_Facebook.html

This petition is an older one, thanking Senator Boxer for her service and support of the issues that benefit their organization, but it is a great way for a low barrier of entry into an email subscription. You can have something like this set up and running year round. Something like, "Stand with us on this issue... add your name and let's tackle this issue together" or "Sign our petition and let everyone know you stand with us on this issue", etc. It's a quick action to take when there might not be much going on legislatively.

Also, you can host this petition as an action to take on an Action Center like this one for Adapt Community Network (they are still new and taking off the bubble wrap on it, but the layout is something we, at Blackbaud could help you get set up with if you are looking for something like this or you can go to the Customer Center and there are a lot of downloadable kits to help with this sort of thing). Here is their link to their Action Center at http://support.adaptcommunitynetwork.org/action_center.

    I hope this information helps.
