Anyone using RE with third party email marketing platform?
We are considering moving to a new email marketing platform but are anchored in RE as our database. Does anyone currently use a third-party email marketing platform (BB product or not) that offers integration wtih RE; and if so, do you love or hate it?
Thanks for your help, RE community!

We use Luminate Online and for the most part we love it. It has some quirks in other areas, but for email it's great and we love that it integrates well with RE.0

We're using MailChimp, but we are NOT (yet) using the MailChimp integration plugin.
Honestly, it's kind of a pain because MailChimp uses email addresses as a primary key. So if someone's primary email address changes MailChimp literally doubles up the records. We're also stuck in a little bit of a feedback loop where bounced email through mailchimp are sent to us, we code in RE, and then send new lists back to MailChimp on a regular basis. But if a "bounced" email is actually a good email address then we have to sort of work around MailChimp's own bounce list.
Right now our marketing team doesn't even have access to Raiser's Edge (long story) so it's the best we can do... Would love to hear from others!Claire Davies-Frishman:

We use Constant Contact without any intergration. I pull fresh lists from RE for each mailing we send out then import the email as an action on the records of those on the recipient list. Then I have to manually link up proposals to the actions if pertinant. I would love to have something more streamlined, but this is the best we got so far.0

I'm not affiliated with Zeidman development (other than drinking beers with David at BBCON) but Mailchimp folks should really checkout his Chimp-e-gration plugin for 2-way sync between Mailchimp lists, RE queries, unsubscribes, etc.2

Hey, I also drank beer with David at BBCON...
How does it handle handle unsubscribes? Does it change the phone/email type and mark the email as DNC automagically?Graham Getty:

This is probably veering away from original question, but I'll just throw in that in my organization, we now use MailChimp for our broader marketing emails and only use BBNC email for our 'operational' emails - BBNC account confirmations, onlne donation acknowledgements, online event registration confirmations. If we have a query-driven list, we're now exporting data from RE and setting it up as a MC list.
- This allows people to sign up for communications easily within MailChimp, they can choose whatever email they want to use (it does NOT have to be their Preferred email in BBNC), and they can adjust their subscriptions at any time without having to log into an account with a username/password.
- We've chosen to basically go only in 1 direction -- monthly we'll query RE to find anyone 'new' who meets our basic marketing criteria and set them up in MailChimp (we pull over their RE ID into MC so we know they have an RE record).
- Also monthly I manually check MailChimp unsubscribes and put a 'NoMarketingEmail' solicit code on their RE record - more for informational purposes so we know how they've reacted to marketing communications and we don't pull them back into MC for any further lists.
- We do NOT transfer that unsubcribe to an RE unsubscribe -- since we're using RE really for operational purposes we want that email to still be actively used UNLESS they specifically unsubscribe via BBNC email or have verbally requested to not get anything.

Hi we use the basic MailChimp right now and its ok as a basis for most email blasts/event invites, with many of the same issues already described. However we're looking at Ema (sp?) . I would like to know if anyone know any more about Ema?

~CDFWe use Constant Contact as well and update the email list and the email selection for segmentation. The de-duping and consistancy is really well done, so if i include an email already on the list it won't get sent twice. the unsubscribe is easy for the recipient.

~CDFWe use iContact and have been very happy with there service. We use UTM codes to intgrate with our online donation site, and it has worked extremely well. Their prices are very reasonable for the amount of services that you receive.

We use Engaging Networks (we're UK-based):
https://www.engagingnetworks.net/uk/
It was originally called e-activist (in the UK?)
Like someone else who's mentioned MailChimp, Egaging Networks uses the email as Primary Key. Also every time a supporter takes an action, the address they put in overwrites what's in the system already, so over time with lazy, unconstrained, unverified entry the addresses get garbled! Combined with the lack of proper Primary Key, anytime a colleague calls it a database I correct them very strongly.
That said, for doing emails and handling them - great.
There's no RE integration yet, but we're assuming an API for NXT will happen.0 -
I haven't used it in a while but I'm pretty Unsubscribe in Mailchimp list = removal from corresponding query used for list in RE.1
-
Sorry to jump on the back of this thread, but it is a related question. I am looking to stop using BBNC for marketing emails and move to Mailchimp with Chimpigration. I would be really glad to hear of anyone's experience using the Chimpigration plug-in - particularly if they are hosted and have made the same transition away from BBNC.1

~CDFWe have been using Robly for a few years but recently got Online Express (OLX) when we upgraded to NXT. The major advantage to Robly is the ability to tailor unsubscribe messages and/or the users can update their options on what they want to unsubscribe to. Currently this option is not available in OLX. So, some of our staff wants to send out emails in one system and some emails in another. Upper management and myself are all in agreement that this is not a good idea because it's too complicated for us to manage who unsubcribes, and it doesn't sync with RE like OLX does. I recommend only doing on system or another unless it's absolutely not possible. The main reason why some of our staff weren't wanting to use OLX was because our designer is not housed in our foundation and we can't give him access to our database (OLX lives inside RE). But from what I've seen from our staff they love Robly.

~CDFWe pretty much do exactly the same thing as Tom. How are you getting around MailChimp's bounce list when the email is good?

We kinda don’t…. Every few weeks I give
our web/email team a totally new list of email addresses and then
pop it into MailChimp as a new list. If MailChimp blocks it,
then they block it. There’s not much we can do about
that. We do try to code RE with all the bounces from
MailChimp, so the two systems are usually not too far off each
other.-Tom

~CDFHi Tom, all,
We make Springbaud, an integration between RE and MailChimp (and Campaign Monitor) and, while not here to push that, I'd like to comment on the email-as-primary-key issue.
Honestly, I think it's a really tough issue. Springbaud originally used either the Con ID or the System Record ID as a List primary key. It was the obvious choice. BUT - and it's a very big "but" - this approach falls in a hole as soon as a user deletes a List. Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, the only available recipient key retained in Campaign results is email address. So without the List, you're knackered when you try to add results back to RE.
And some email providers actually discourage you from maintaining multiple lists, charging for recipients on a per-list basis rather than uniquely. So the deletion of Lists is a fact of life, leaving little choice but to go with email address as a primary key.
I'd love to hear any other ideas. We're actually going to build in to Springbaud the ability to use Con ID or Record ID as a key and have a fall-back to email address. But this can cause its own complication, not least through confusion.

Previously we used Sphere and Constant Contact, and had issues of differing sorts with both. Complaints from donors having issues with Sphere giving forms -- CC email signups coming in with no names -- the kinds of things that wear away at you until you've just had enough. OLX has given us higher responses rates, more tribute gifts, more recurring gifts, more recaptured lapsed donors, more dollars...all around, it was a good move for us.
best regards,
Katie

We've separated out our BBNC email and now primarily use MailChimp -- and basically we do our best to keep the information aligned. We pull over the constituent ID into MailChimp -- so we can see which emails were imported from RE and which were entered independently.
But for now, we live with a bit of inconsistency between RE and MailChimp - someone can change their email within MailChimp so it no longer matches what we have in RE - we may merge duplicate records in RE so the constituent ID may no longer match what's in MailChimp, that sort of thing.
But our primary goal was to provide an easy way for our constituents to sign up and manage their email subscriptions - which NetCommunity never offered. And our Communications group loves MailChimp because it's easier to use, has better analytics. So we're willing to live with the lack of total 'lock-down' between the two systems.0 -
What are you using to export/import your EN data into RE? we are using both and currently use JMG solutions, however we are looking to upgrade to RE NXT and may have to use another connector such as Import-o-matic and I'm looking for any feedback to help make that decision
