Recurring Gifts

Options
Last year we had our first two recurring gifts and they are coded to our annual appeal. As we are starting a new year, should I create a new recurring gift pledge for our new annual appeal? Or continue to link the recurring gift to the original pledge, but change the appeal to the new one? They have essentially given us an open-ended recurring gift. Is there an advantage to having all the gifts linked to the original pledge? Is there an advantage to creating a new pledge for each year? Your advice is greatly appreciated. - Jill

It can be done either way.  I'd lean toward changing the appeal but it depends on what you need to report and in what detail. Your appeal changes each year, what about the fund? Do you report by appeal? By fund?

I change ours. To me it's easier to run reports on one fund/appeal than always remembering to include past ones.  If you keep the original appeal as active, you can not mark appeal as inactive which we like to do without some issues. For us  it's more important to have the money pull into reports for the current year reports. For what it's worth, I don't 'create' a new recurring gift but just change the existing one.

If fund is the same you can see total giving when looking at fund regardless of appeal.

What works best for one org may not be what works best for another due to your fund/appeal structure and reporting needs.
  • Thanks JoAnn! I hadn't thought of updating the appeal in the existing recurring gift! Thank you for sharing your solution. The fund remains the same for both appeals.
