Split Tribute Gift?

We have a donor who has sent in one check (i.e. $90) in memory of 3 different people. I would like to throw this out to see how the BB community would handle this gift. Would you create 3 tributes on the single gift of $90 or would you create 3 different gifts of $30 with one tribute on each gift?

Do you have the tribute module? That could be a factor in how best to handle.

We do not have that module. If the gift all goes to one fund, we enter it as one gift with notation of the different memorials. This works for us - may not for others. As we do not like to use split gift function, if it were going to more than one fund, I would enter gift to each fund separately.

Just the way one org does it....

We do have the tribute module which is a great tool! At my previous organization, there would be some donors who would ask how much was given in honor/memory of their loved one so it would make it difficult to provide that information if the gift was broken between multiple individuals. Thus far, at the organization that I am currently at, no donor has requested this information.

If you're worried about reporting on how much was raised for each individual at some point in the future, then I would do 3 separate gifts. If not, and if you also do not disclose the amount given within whatever notification you send out to the family, then I would just add all 3 to the same gift. I would only send 1 thank you letter in either case - I'd just leave notes in the reference field (which we always output in our letters) indicating to the person preparing the mail to change the gift amount and list all 3 memorial names in the language of the letter.

I think it completely depends on if you will need to ever know how much was given in tribute to Person A. If you do need to know that at any point, I would probably do 3 separate gifts of $30 each and put each one in tribute of 1 of the 3 honorees. If not, then go with one gift, and use the trbute module to record that it's in honor/memory of all 3. My foundation never gets asked how much money was donated, just what gifts have been received from which donors, so we go with the one gift with 3 honorees method.
