How to Run a Report or Query to Identify lapse, repeat, new etc

I would like to run a query (or report, whatever is suggested) for a specific appeal and to identify if the donors who made gifts to that specific appeal are repeat donors, lapse donors, new. When i run a query by that appeal and put last gift as the output, I obviously get the last gift from that appeal. I really want the gift before that. Any suggestions? I did a chat support, and tried a query that was beyond my query skills

and was not successful.

I want to be able to do this for every appeal that we have going forward, so I am hoping to set up a template report or query and just change the appeal when the fundraisers ask me for the analysis.

Beth - Just to make sure I understand what you are saying -

You have an Appeal that you use from year to year and you want to know who has

Given to this appeal last year but not this year
Given to this appeal last year and this year
Given to this appeal this year only

Have you looked at the Comparative Report? I think it's in Analytical Reports > Comparative Report

You can set filteres based on your Campaign, Fund or Appeal - and set the date ranges you want to compare.

If last year is in Column 1 and this year in Column 2 - then in the above scenarios - people in Group 1 appear only in Column 1

People in Group 2 appear in both Columns. People in Group 3 appear only in Column 2

Thanks! I want to look at donors who gave to our "2016 Tree of Lights" appeal. I want to be able to see prior gifts for just those donors to determine lapse, repeat, new etc. is that possible with that report? And the way we do our appeals, each year we add the new year, so last year would have been 2015 tree of lights. BUT I want to see any gift... not just tree of light, if that makes sense!

Try the "Donor Giving Analysis" Dashboard - filtered by the Appeal you are looking at. I think this is the easiest way to get what you want. There are other ways, but most of them involve running quite a few reports.

Have you tried running a Lybunt or Sybut report? You can select the date and appeal in you criteria and should get the information you need. There is also a new donor report you can run. I don't rely on queries so much when running gift information. I find you can get conflicting information.

I would agree that you need to use the SYBUNT and LYBUNT and the New Donor reports, which can all be spit out as static queries. For all of the components you want to see, you really are going to spend more time struggling to get one query to pull it all -- better to do muliple queries and then merge them, Export with the criteria you want to review. AND if you are relying on Query to review your list, you are going to have things in there that are not part of what you asked for -- Query is a grouping tool, you must use Export to see the info you want to see once the records are corraled into a group.
