Recurring Gifts

Options
Hi folks

I've taken over managing our recurring gifts, including Standing Orders and Direct Debits. I have noticed however that a large proportion of our Standing Orders are currently entered as cash gifts, not recurring gifts. Can anyone think why this would be and whether I should change them all to recurring gifts.

Thanks!

  • Hi Victoria,

Are the standing order gifts opened ended (i.e. there is no end date to the gift - basically they are giving until the end of time as far as you know)

If so I'd say yes, change them to recurring gift-pay cash

If they have an end date our process is to set up a pledge for the total expected amount and the payments are pay-cash gift type

Though I haven't formally titled them standing orders, I'm guessing someone could come in after me and say the same thing. :)  As Joanne said, that generally would be our process also.  However, I do have about a half dozen people who've requested not to be call/contacted by a solicitor but to just be sent a bill annually.  I have not entered these as recurring gifts.  I send them bill each spring and enter as cash gift.  So, someone could have your same question.  They could be entered as recurring without affecting finance as recurring gifts are not posted.  When the first request for that came in, I really didn't even think of entering it as recurring or expect more requests. Maybe that's similar to how yours got there.
  • We're in the middle of cleaning up exactly the same situation - we've got standing order gifts that suddenly stop, followed by a series of cash gifts of the same amount to the same fund on the same day each month, then a "new" standing order starts again. Also, a lot of our standing order recurring gifts only have one transaction linked to them, so some constituents have dozens of recurring gifts on their record when really they've been giving continuously and should only have the one. We wanted to clean this up so we can get a good measure of how long people give, and when/why they lapse, which is a bit difficult to do currently as most people look like their standing order lapses every month! laugh
