Tracking Naming Opportunities for Capital Campaign

Options
My nonprofit is embarking on a $270M construction plan, which includes many naming opportunities. We have many potential named areas and a need to track in RE or a plug in to RE. Can you please provide any solutions your organization may have found and implemented and how they are working to date. We need a resource that can be used by our development officers to verify what is available, held or sold quickly. Thank you for your input.

    shani traum:

We created a constituency code of Naming Opportunity and created Org records for each Naming Opportunity.

The Name tells you what the opportunity is and the Address is the location (which campus or more identifying details as needed)

The records each have a series of Attributes:

    Status (Available, On Hold, Reserved)

Amount ( $$ "required" for naming)

    Category (Indoor, Outdoor, Religious, Program)

Funded Amount (Amount actually received for naming)

    Dedication Date

This set up works for us because anyone can open up the record, look at the attribute tab, and see that status and the $$ amount set for the opportunity.  Besides the obvious querying on what is available, reserved, or on hold (in process with a donor), we can pull other useful queries as well.  If we have a donor who likes to make outside spaces, we can query on that.  If we have a donor who wants to donate $250,000, we can query on opportunities that fit a gift of that size.

Once the Naming Opportunity has been, well - named, we link the org record over to the donor record so we can easily see on the donor record that they have named something here and what they've named.

We can also add actions to the Naming Opp record relating to ordering plaques/signage and pdfs of the signage to the media tab.

We did basically the same thing when I was at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago.  It worked beautifully for our Donor Relations team as well as our Major Gift Officers.

  • Thank you, Shani, for your reply. We will research this option.
  • Hi Tracy:

We will be wrapping up our New Hospital Campaign.  We decided to use proposals for this.  For each campaign prospect that was being solicited, a MGO was assigned, a prosposal created for the campaign and the prospect tracked through the various stages.  Once they chose a naming opportunity and pledge was made, we entered the naming opportunity in the proposal under attributes.

We use gift attributes. Then the information is on the actual gift that was made for that naming opportunity. We made a category that was called something like: Campaign Naming Opportunitues and the description box is a text field where we can put the exact naming opportunity. This worked well and it is easy to query, export and report on.

    Karen,

    Great idea ...

Do you find that you get multiples of the gift attribute for the same naming opportunity?  For example, if someone makes a pledge, the attribute will populate on on pay-cash gifts as well.

  • I am very new to doing this and just beginning our capital campaign. I saw a thread on this earlier and have adopted the method of creating an org record called Naming Opportunities. I add it as a cross linked relationship to each donor record and add the named area in Notes.  So far it seems to work okay, but I am a little concerned when more areas and our brick program get underway. In its early stages, now might be a good time to revisit and change it or add more like attributes. Thank you all for your suggestions.
