Old company vs New Company

What is your practice in setting up a new company which bought out the company? Do you replace the new company with the old company name.  Same address for both.  Thanks.

  • For us, it somewhat depends on the particular situation and our relationship with that company.  Generally, though, if the new company is not already in RE, I would just update the name, put the old name as an Alias so it still appears when searching, and add whatever information I have about the merger/buy out/name change in either Notes or Media (whichever is most appropriate).  Also check out and update Relationships (Contacts) as needed...and wherever/however you keep track of how the name should be published in donor lists.
  • Thank you so much.

For me, it is not the same company and would not have the same relationship our organization. For example, an individual owned his own insurance company and was always a sponsor of our events. When he sold to another company, I wanted all the sponsorship history to remain on the previous company, but did not want to credit the "new" company with the history of sponsorship. I set up the new company. Even though the person who sold his company remained our contact for possible sponsorship from new company, there was no guarantee that this company would honor the relationship. And, even though we were contacting the same address, the new company is international, and we can connect with more branches.
