WordPress Migration & Training for the Code-less

Options
We have been using NetCommunity for several years now and we are considering migrating our website to a WordPress platform.  One of the cons on our pros/cons list is that no one in the office knows how to codes or knows WordPress (the fact that you didn’t need to know code to use BBNC was one of the features that originally sold us on NetCommunity).  So if we migrated it means either contracting with someone to maintain the site or invest in some training.  We are looking into to possible training options and I would like to know if anyone here is using WordPress and has had to seek training for their staff and what that experience has been, both pro and con.

  • Robin  - Just recently we split off our website - moving the non-transactional content from BBNC to Wordpress and retaining only the transactional pages (donor portal, donations, online event registrations, and bulk email) in BBNC.

We had a design firm migrate the bulk of the site onto Wordpress and they then held a one-day training for the handful of staff who needed to update content in Wordpress. The design firm would continue to assist us if we have more challenging design changes/updates and our host provider hosts the Wordpress site and performs Wordpress upgrades.

It is yet another system to learn - but it's been fairly easy to manage and content updates are much easier to do than in BBNC.
  • We are in the progress of migrating to WordPress right now.  As Gina mentioned we will be using donations and portal from BBNC for a while until we are able to completely move away from all things blackbaud.  I think you will find WordPress is much easier to use and allows you full control/freedom over your content compared to BBNC.  If you don't have a development team in place, I would contract the migration and design of your site to an agency.  Once its migrated it is pretty much a codeless experience and much more robust than BBNC.
