‘Class of” field in a student record

Options
We are a 1st grade – 8th grade School (we might add grades in the future). In the student record in RE there is a ‘class of’ field. In a K-12 school an 8th grader will be class of 2021, but in our little world the 8th grader is class of 2017. Just want to know what other people are doing in this situation. How will it affect the data when we grow into a K-12 school?  Any suggestions or best practices?

I have worked in high schools and in a k-8 school but never one that *thought* or *knew* it would eventually become a k-12.  Is this in discussion?

Either way -- thoughts -- Lower/Middle Schools are almost always thought of as a separate institution from a High School.  But you would want both schools to have the ability to be Primary Education and there is only one.

what if you used the School Type and utilized K-8 and High School (with the initials of your school included so that it would never get mixed up with any other types you may or may not utilize in that field?

I've worked in two schools and both use the 'Class of' field for the year of graduation and mark the primary alumni information box. This recorded year is also useful for post-secondary school records. Grade levels are always rolling and sometimes individuals may be held back.

  • Did you use the 'class of' field as the year they
'graduated' from your school (K-8) or the year they would really
    graduate ?

'Class of' is the year students expect to graduate (i.e., '17, '18, '19...) and actually do ('14, '15, '16). Adjustments are made only when students have gap years or are held back. I hope  this is helpful.

  • Thank you!
