Legacy Students and Families

Options
Hello.  I'm interested in how other institutions manage/track Legacy students and families.

Do you track them in RE with a special attribute or assign them an addiitional constituency code?  Do you have a special "Legacy" relationship type that links the family members?

We are trying to find a way to track our Legacy students and link them to their respective relatives so we can export the info into spreadsheets/lists.   We currently use a multi spreadsheets that are constantly being updated/changed etc. and requires cumbersome cross-referencing.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Michelle

We code all alumni with the constituency of Alumni, and current students as Student, and then we link parents to their children through relationships - just standard Parent-Child.  We also link any other known relationships with the relationship types of Siblings, Grandparent/Grandchild, Aunt/Uncle, Cousins and so forth.  Then we can query on Constituencies of Alumni or Student and output for any familial relationship type where the relation also has the constituency of Alumni.

It's been pretty easy to track, without attributes or special additional coding.  However, we have a fairly small alumni group (about 50K).  I've worked with much larger alumni pools and tracking all those family ties through relationship records would have been an administrative nightmare.

Hello, we use a Constituent Code "Child of Alumnus" to indicate if the relationship is part of a legacy family.  We pull this Constituent Code with the "Student" Const Code to capture legacy families with current students.  I'd like any suggestions to improve this system, however, because I've found that duplicates are created if the name of the incoming students aren't connected to their original record/relationships.  I try to prevent this by thoroughly checking for duplicates during the import process.

In addition to agreeing with Rachel that the Relationships work just fine for tracking legacy families.

I must add that at one school I was at, they wanted to be able to pull groups, with just a click, that were legacy at two different levels 1. Immediate/Primary family (mother, father, brother, sister, grandparent(s).  and 2. Secondary family (aunts, uncles cousins and so on)  so we did establish a Constit Code for each group, that way it was obvious on the Bio 1 tab
