Student Sponsorship - How do you use RE to track?

We have a student sponsorship program that we would like to manage in RE. We've considered Memberships and Recurring Payments. We want to track renewals, lapses, different pay cycles (Monthly, Annual, Quarterly). etc. Any thoughts?

How have you already tracked the information? Is this an entirely new program or will you need to convert old data? Do you already have the Membership module or would you be purchasing it for this program?

It's a relatively new program with a few records to convert. We have been using Recurring Payments but this is limiting in reports. We own the Membership Module and have considered using it but were unsure if this would really be optimal.

It sounds to me as though you might need a combination of the two. Membership to track the renewals and lapses and recurring gifts to track the payment schedules (and to process credit cards if you use BBMS). My only concern would be, if you already have the Membership module, would setting this up cause any issues for the data currently tracked there? Theoretically, you could work around that, but I think you'd need to plan carefully in order to do so.
