How to capture primary facilitator on a gift?

Options
Hi all,

Is there a way to tag a primary facilitator on a gift? For example, one of our constituents got a friend of hers to make a donation. This wouldn't be a soft credit on a gift. We also don't want to make that constituent a solictor because we want to keep the list of solicitors streamlined.

I'm sure this has come up in other organizations. Any thoughts on best practices?

Thank you!

  • This is exactly what the Solicitor tab was made for, but I can understand wanting to keep your Solicitor tab clean, especially if your org uses a lot of one-time peer-to-peer fundraising. A lot would depend on how you needed to track that information later (if at all). Various options could include any combination of: Facilitator's name in the Gift reference; a "Facilitated by" Gift Attribute, with the Facilitator's name in the Comments field; a new Individual Relationship called "Facilitator", if you expect multiple gifts through this relationship over time.

Reporting on any of these fields would be easy through Query, but in Reports, you might need to tweak or Customize a report to make it work, or use a combination of data fields. In a Gift Detail and Summary Report, for instance, you could select to include only gifts with the "Facilitated by"  Attribute. But, Gift Attribute is not an available output Column, while Solicitor and Gift Reference are. So to accomplish the same reporting functionality as a Solicitor relationship, you would benefit by including the Facilitator's name both in the Gift Reference and as an Attribute.
  • Great answers. Thank you!

  • We would track that person as a Solicitor, but create a separate type to distinguish easily from a staff solicitor.  For instance, for our annual gala fundraiser, we have a very large volunteer committee that brings in their own friends and associates -- we connect each volunteer with "their" list using a Solicitor type of Event.  This would be separate from a staff Primary solicitor or a volunteer Board solicitor.  Hope that helps provide additional food for thought.

    best regards,
