For organizations that managed donor advised funds, how do you track grants made via that DAF?

Options
Our organization fundraises for our many programs and operating budget but we also have a division that opens and manages donor advised funds. Now, under current practice, we record money being deposited into a donor's DAF account via RE first (as a regular gift transaction) for that transaction to then move over to FE. Indeed, the DAF balance figures are really maintained and up-to-date in FE and not RE. But the grant history from that DAF is stored under a third database called GrantedGE.

Today I was asked if we track "grants" made from the DAF in RE. I found that our organization doesn't do this because RE wasn't designed to do this.

Now, I ask only individuals who work on organizations that manage DAFs---how do you use RE to "track" grants from DAFs? (if at all).

Thanks,

Rodrigo

  • Rodrigo, our set up is like your organization's, gifts are recorded in RE, the information is posted into FE and grants are processed through GrantedGE.
  • Add a gift attribute to these specific "Gifts".
  • One of my clients does this by creating a pledge for all grants when the commitment letter is signed.  But, I know that this solution may not work for others depending upon how your accounting procedures address pledges.
  • We also used a gift subtype for "Deferred Grants" to better
track these.  The gift subtype is linked to debit and
credit gift distribtution accounts as well.
