Matching Gift that is a Pledge Payment

Options
We have a donor who is using a matching gift payment as a pledge payment. What is the best way to enter this gift? I want to be able to show/note that it was a MG but I also need the gift to be applied to a pledge? Any insight/advice would be wonderful!

  • If the MG is company money vs. the donor's money, I see two options.  Enter gift from MG company, choose to apply gift to existing pledge (that of the donor).  You would be limited to noting that it's a MG in reference, notes, gift code or some other field. It would not code as a  MG payment on the gift tab.

If this were our situation with company money and wanting it recorded as a MG, we would adjust down original pledge amount by the MG. Enter a MG pledge and then pay pledge with MG funds.  Donor may be soft-credited.

I'm guessnig some orgs would credit MG to the individual as their gift.  That is not our procedure. When we began with RE we often had donors including anticipated MG amount in their personal pledge.  We record them separately, donors now list them separately and have had no problems with it.
  • Hello.  We have had to work through this and honestly, there is no 'best solution' in my mind.  We enter the MG Pledge (like normal), but when the MG Pay-Cash gift is received, in order to apply it to the donor's original pledge, we must "ignore" the original MG Pledge, then load in the donor's pledge and apply the gift to that gift record.  We then remove the original MG Pledge since this has technically been fulfilled, just not applied as a MG Pay-Cash gift.

We lose the tracking of MG Pay-Cash gifts, but keep the integrity of the donor's pledge amount and enter in the way needed to appear as a Pay-Cash gift on the donor's Gift tab.  We've chosen this option instead of adjusting the original pledge amount down since this impacts the stewardship/MGO side of life that is tracked through RE.

I really don't like deleting the original MG Pledge, but the benefit of having the donor's gift record be accurate and visually represent what the stewardship and MGO staff need outweighs this I feel.

  • You could enter the MG pledge and payment as usual and then write-off the installment for the amount of the MG pledge. This will lower the balance on the pledge without changing the original pledge amount.

That's a great idea, that will keep the MG Pay-Cash gift in tact.  Thanks!

  • Thank you everyone for answering! We've never had this come up since I have been here and the suggestions really helped!
