Can someone only purchase an upsell and not a participation type?

One of our affliates has the following participation types:

 

*1-mile Family Fun Run Participant

*1-mile Family Fun Run - Family of Four

*5k Run Participant

*10k Run Participant

*Phantom Walker

 

Then their upsells are:

 

*Become a t-shirt sponsor (like add your company's logo or your family's name to the event t-shirts)

*Quarter-mile marker sponsorship (signage along the route, either a logo or family name)

*Business sponsorship (a package that includes their info on the website, on the t-shirt and along the route)

 

Is is possible for someone during the registration process only to purchase an upsell (say they just want to sponsor the t-shirt but don't want to come for the run? Or, would those have to be treated as separate participation types?

There has to be some way that a person registers to get to the upsell option. So yes, they have to go through some sort of Participant Type to get to this. I don't know how confusing it would be. You could create a participation type that is free and have instruction that tells the sponsor to go through everything and then choose their sponsorship level in the upsell section. 

 

Now another way you could do this is by simply creating sponor levels on your event donation page that the TR event is using. You could then just provide a URL directly to each donation level (sponsorship level). It would all come out in the same transaction report for TR. It might be something to thinkk through. I'm not sure which method would be the least confusing.
