Director of Philanthropy

Building Changes seeks a Director of Philanthropy. This position is a member of the executive team and works in partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to set revenue goals, create strategies, and implement development plans. This role is responsible for growing a program that generates critical funding to support our strategic plan and meet our mission. This position reports to the Executive Director, manages a team of two, will raise between $3M to $6M annually, and will be located at our office in Seattle. Working in a hybrid in-office/remote capacity is available to all staff.

Responsibilities of this position will include:

Fundraising Strategy & Implementation – 40%

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of a comprehensive and integrated fundraising program based on the cycle of cultivation, acquisition, and stewardship.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of individual and corporate donors and prospects.
  • Work with programmatic staff to inform funding strategy and targets.
  • Work with organizational leadership to build a compelling, long-term case for support.
  • Ensure the creation and effective implementation of fundraising tools, materials, and messaging for marketing and fundraising purposes.
  • Conduct research and prospecting for new sponsors and donors and giving potential among current sponsors and donors.
  • Ensure development and engagement efforts reflect Building Changes' commitment to promote racial equity, social justice, and inclusion and our approach to work encompassing implementation, research, and advocacy.

Staff and Board Engagement – 30%

  • Develop and support a collaborative, motivated development team by clearly communicating agency vision, implementing yearly staff development plans, effective supervision practices and coaching.
  • Monitor and regularly report on fundraising progress to Executive Director and Development Committee.
  • Ensure that development efforts align with the highest standards of ethics meet or exceed industry standards as put forth by the AFP and Community Centric Fundraising.
  • Cultivate and guide the Board Development Committee, including agenda formation and collaboration with Committee Chair and Executive Director.
  • Support Board members in joyous fundraising through strategic engagement to meet new supporters and create new connections.
  • Create and manage the development team budget and expenses.

Organizational Leadership – 15%

  • Partner with the Executive Team to participate in organizational strategy development, goal setting, decision making, policy setting, and other activities to support achievement of overall agency goals.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the Executive Director, Committee Chair, Executive Team, and the Board of Directors on fundraising strategy and cultivating a culture of philanthropy.
  • Work effectively as part of the Executive Team, modeling collaboration and contributing to strategies for staff management, communication, and acknowledgment.

Other Duties – 15%

  • Learn about and promote racial equity, social justice, and inclusion within and outside of Building Changes.
  • Project manage and/or support the production of effective events agency-wide, as assigned, including, for example, a content briefing for funders.
  • Represent Building Changes in a professional manner to community partners and the broader public.


The successful candidate will have a combination of the following:

  • A minimum eight years of experience in fund development, including a prior role supervising a team. Desired experience fundraising for programmatic work, research, and/or policy advocacy. Knowledge of Washington State's philanthropic community is needed.
  • A commitment to Racial Equity and will center their work and fundraising in these practices. Candidates must be open and dedicated to their own personal and collective journey towards living into Building Changes' commitment to become an anti-racist and anti-oppressive organization.
  • Experience fundraising for an intermediary or non-direct-service programs a plus. Experience raising private funds to match public funding a plus.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with issues surrounding youth and families experiencing homelessness. Ability to speak about homelessness with respect and dignity for those who are experiencing it.
  • Strategic thinker who is highly motivated, organized, creative, flexible, and willing to take risks with new ideas.
  • High level of professionalism and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with donor database management. Salesforce expérience a signifiant plus.
  • Experience creating and sending mass email campaigns desired. Campaign Monitor experience a significant plus.
  • Experience with donor communications and engagement events desired.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and organizational achievements verbally and in writing.
  • Open minded and an ability to work with diverse individuals in a welcoming, culturally competent manner.
  • Ability to project manage fundraising activities with staff and Board members.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work and manage projects independently, maintain self-motivation, and persist in the face of challenges.
  • Ability to travel locally to meet with donors; valid driver's license and ability to use personal car as needed.

The salary for this position is $90,000. We offer excellent health, time off, retirement and other benefits.
