Gift adjustment for one gift into two gifts

Options

One of our constituents gifted us $5,000 for donation and it was posted. Now she wants to split the gift between a donation and membership dues. Do you adjust the first gift to be the donation amount and then add a second gift for the membership dues? Has anyone else had this situation happen where you had to reclass the first gift into two different gifts? If so, what was your procedure for adjusting the gifts.

@Debra Watson I think that makes the most sense. I would get in contact with the accounting folks first to determine if you need to unpost the gift or to delete and re-enter as two gifts. Also if your organization uses split gifts, you'll have to refer to your organizations rules for coding. If you use the membership module, that needs to be taken into consideration for adding the membership fees.

Regardless of how you proceed, you'll need to document everything in the reference fields or somewhere. Having some way for people to see what happened and why the gift was altered it paramount.

  • @Dariel Dixon thank you Dariel. It was suggested by our Blackbaud consultant to adjust the original gift to a new amount (not delete or unpost it). I adjusted the $5k original gift to $2700 for the same GL account number. Then for the remaining balance it was mentioned to add new gift for membership dues of $2300. Then I would post the adjustment through to FE and then post the new additional member dues gift to FE. Any thoughts?
