Is it worth using the Greeting Page - Event Gifts button?

I was wondering if anyone has looked into how much money they raise in gerenal "event gifts" for a TeamRaiser compared to participant "sponsorship" gifts.  

 

In the TR set up you can add a button to "give directly to this event", but I feel a lot of people will go here by mistake when they actually want to sponsor people.  I've attached a sample of the sidebar to show you this button.

 

Any case studies or tips would be appreciated as to if you find this button resourceful!

We've debated this back and forth a bit here, and leaned toward enabling team and event gifts.

 

You are right, many of them are accidental. And we spend a bit of time soft-crediting them later, especially events with OCI and fundraising minimums. However, some less tech-savvy users just can't figure out the whole search for a participant or team thing, and we figure it's better to give them a simple way to give rather than risk the donation due to frustration.

 

Ideally, donors should be going directly to a participants personal page from a solication email and avoiding the whole mess.

 

I'm just guesstimating, but I'd say less than 5% of the gifts wind up in event gifts unintentionally. @Matthew Aldridge do you agree?
