OVERVIEW

New York Yacht Club Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to ensure the historic preservation of its landmark clubhouses in New York and Newport. These magnificent and treasured buildings are central to the New York Yacht Club’s history and heritage. The New York Yacht Club has approximately 3400 members. The Foundation is run by members who volunteer their time and expertise in support of its mission.

This position will be based at Harbour Court, in Newport and oversee the development, expansion and administration of all Foundation fundraising programs, including the organization’s long-term strategic plans. Working closely with [Board members and other stakeholders] the Director of Development will handle the cultivation of fundraising opportunities, fundraising communications and donor retention and other projects as needed.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser, with hands-on experience in not-for-profit operations. They should be comfortable working in a high-touch, relationship-focused role and excel in working collaboratively with donors, members and a wide range of colleagues to support, execute and advance the Foundation’s mission, vision and core values.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising/ Donor Retention:

  • Identify new fund-raising opportunities, and fine-tune recent efforts to segment donors by prime member type.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain a wide variety of donor retention events and programs and continue to grow attendance at events.
  • Maintain all donor records in the Raiser’s Edge NXT database. Maintain reports, facilitate all donor correspondence and recognition on a timely basis, and send all donor acknowledgment and pledge letters
  • Expand fundraising activities to support the mission of the Foundation; increase participation and level of giving during the annual appeal and provide strategic direction for fundraising efforts for longer-term projects.
  • Partnering with the Board, build relationships with members and others to increase visibility and level of contribution to the Foundation each year.

Fundraising Marketing and Communications:

  • Responsible for overseeing the development and administration of all marketing and communication projects with a fundraising perspective.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of fundraising communications—from web presence to external relations.
  • Oversee the development of all print and digital communication including and the Foundation’s website.
  • Find new ways to build awareness of the Foundation via the NYYC and their communication platforms.
  • Measure the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts and provide timely analyses and reporting.

Foundation Planning/ Reviews:

  • Develop and leverage expert knowledge on the Foundation’s strategic plan and governance requirements while working closely with the Board Chair and Board members.
    • Report on Foundation results at Board and Executive Committee meetings.
    • Managing the preparation of Foundation presentations and handouts for distribution to the New York Yacht Club Board, donors, prospects, and other key stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate and lead annual budget reviews with quarterly updates and periodic forecasts. Alert Board to possible issues on a timely basis.
  • Ensure Foundation resources are used effectively to fulfill its mission.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Passionate, principled, with high integrity, consistently showing respect for others and acknowledging their contributions, fostering a positive atmosphere and a sense of pride in working for the Foundation and the NYYC.
  • Proven leadership and relationship management experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and enthusiastic communicator with proven interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels of an organization.
  • Comfortable working very independently.
  • Passion for philanthropy and nonprofit work, and historic preservation a plus.
  • Interest in the history, culture and sport of sailing is a plus.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • At least seven years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with at least three years in a fundraising role; a track record of effectively scaling up performance and outcomes.
  • Strong fundraising experience with the ability to understand and engage with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experienced in being part of a team that brought an organization to the next stage of growth including, achieving strategic objectives, and managing a budget.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT (Blackbaud certified strongly preferred) and Wordpress.
  • Past experience collaborating with and working for a Board of Directors.
  • College degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
