Summary of Position

The Director, School Data and Analytics is responsible for; overseeing and delivering data strategies that support analysis and visualization of our strategic initiatives and key operational areas; the implementation, management and oversight of emergent data systems, platforms and tools, as well as oversight and governance on best practices of our data systems and processes. This position is responsible for managing the data team and technical analysis support services. This position supports the development of data literacy skills for our facility and administrative staff. The Director, School Data and Analytics helps to develop, as part of the Technology and Innovation team, the technology vision and plan.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Manages the business intelligence and visualization systems, as well as managing oversight of all BSS databases, academic and operational, to ensure best practices and processes are in place. This includes working with the data stewards and department technical custodians to review and implement practices and processes for data frameworks, integrity and accuracy, privacy and security.
  • Develops a whole school Data Plan, including a governance strategy, of school data systems that moves the school forward on collection, curation, and strong analysis of key data sets aligned with the strategic plan and key operational areas.
  • Directs, and in some cases delivers, data analytic projects that can provide evidence and or visualization of strategic initiatives or key operational areas.
  • Works with employees across the school, such as leadership, teachers, administrative staff, and their own team, to ensure ethical use, consent and privacy is upheld in all the use of school data.
  • Researches, plans and implements emergent systems, data collection streams including digitization of processes, that are integrated where possible, in order to support department needs and organizational goals.
  • Develops and delivers, in collaboration with school leadership, data literacy and learning opportunities. Prepares and or facilitates the delivery of educational training programs and materials.
  • Leads and manages the Database Team. Supervising the database team would include, but not be limited to, mentoring and goal setting, performance reviews, as well as providing direction and task oversight.
  • Coordinates and supports electronic data submissions to the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC), ONSIS, Ministry of Education, and Toronto Board of Health.
  • Stays current on security best practices as well as relevant privacy legislation.
  • Research, coordinate, test and prepare rollout plans for all new systems and upgrades to BSS database systems.
  • Participates in department budget and strategic planning processes.
  • Coordinate administration of SQL server with other TI Leaders including: security; backups and replication.
  • Embeds diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into all processes and practices.

Skills, Experience and Attributes

  • Excellent understanding of relational database structure
  • Demonstrated experience of management and development of data interfaces and data transfer.
  • Demonstrated advanced experience using data reporting and analytics tools (e.g. Crystal reports, DOMO/Tableau) and familiarity with coding approaches using Python and associated libraries (pandas, etc.)
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Understanding of Data governance, Data Analytics Frameworks, Privacy legislation
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud systems related to education
  • Knowledge of K-12 reporting requirements
  • Advanced Excel and Access skills
  • Experience managing/supporting a SQL Database in a windows environment
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Strong sense of initiative with an ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both spoken and written)
