Job Summary

The Office of Advancement at Oberlin College seeks applications for the position of Associate Director of Alumni Communications . This is a full-time, continuing, 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director of Alumni Communications (ADAC) will work within a collaborative environment and support efforts to communicate with alumni, parents, students, and friends to encourage greater philanthropy, alumni connections, engagement, and a sense of community. The ADAC influences strategy and supports the creation, collection, and dissemination of engaging, compelling, and creative multi-channel communications to support the priorities and goals of the Office of Advancement.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee, execute, and measure the results of a comprehensive and integrated alumni communications strategy focused on promoting engagement and philanthropy across traditional, digital, and social media channels.
  • Oversee and manage the Alumni Engagement website, working in conjunction with the Office of Communications.
  • Manage social media for Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving and coordinate with other campus partners to ensure maximum impact of social media efforts.
  • Write news articles, announcements, and effective marketing pieces for advancement initiatives, as well as compile communications from existing sources to ensure the maximum effectiveness and use of available information.
  • Produce Around the Square, Oberlin’s monthly alumni e-newsletter, in partnership with the Office of Communications.
  • Create and manage the production of a new events roundup for regular e-distribution to Oberlin’s alumni community.
  • Develop consistent/standardized email templates and facilitate distribution of mass emails for the Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving team that are consistent with Oberlin’s institutional brand.
  • Guide communication efforts regarding events, activities, and news related to alumni and alumni engagement programming.
  • Serve as a cross-divisional resource for communications needs and special projects.
  • In conjunction with the Advancement Operations team, manage the communications tools and platforms utilized by the Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; 2-5 years’ experience, preferably in communications, writing, alumni engagement, and/or a higher education environment, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing publications and willingness to cover a number of varied subjects; experience in building a sense of community for dispersed constituents through social media a plus.
  • Experience with and aptitude for graphic design/HTML, web communication vehicles/communities, databases and desktop publishing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work well in a team setting and with all constituents of the College, with particular attention to sensitive and diplomatic handling of matters.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills: ability to generate novel and creative approaches to problem solving and ability to respond appropriately to pressure, deadlines, and changes in priorities and schedules.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated individuals who are willing to balance a multitude of tasks and consider the needs of the entire team are encouraged to apply.
