Job Summary

The Office of Advancement at Oberlin College seeks applications for the position of Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement. This is a full-time, Administrative & Professional Staff position reporting to the Director of Volunteer Engagement & Strategic Partnerships.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement will lead and manage key alumni engagement initiatives and programs designed to strengthen relations between alumni and Oberlin College, enable alumni to better support Oberlin’s students and faculty, and encourage greater philanthropic support of the college and its mission. Collaborating with colleagues across the Office of Advancement, the Assistant Director will develop and implement a young alumni engagement initiative, support reunion-based programs and events, manage programs that bolster pride and celebrate alumni, and support alumni engagement and volunteer efforts led by other members of the alumni engagement team.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop, lead, execute, and assess a comprehensive young alumni engagement strategy for Oberlin College and Conservatory that bolsters pride within recent graduates, encourages their involvement with alumni activities and volunteerism in support of the college, and builds a foundation for a long-term relationship with Oberlin. Work with colleagues in alumni engagement and across advancement to integrate other initiatives focused on young alumni into this strategy.
  • Provide event planning and volunteer management support for reunion programs hosted during Commencement & Reunion Weekend and Homecoming.
  • Manage the Alumni in Support of Oberlin College volunteer program.
  • Manage online engagement programs that keep alumni connected to Oberlin including the Oberlin Alumni Digital Community and Oberlin alumni-owned business directory.
  • Working with the director, manage and support a group of affinity-based alumni networks (for both identity-based and interest/experientially-based affinity groups). Ensure these volunteer-led networks can—through events, communications, and other initiatives—connect alumni to one another, to students in need of support, and to Oberlin.

Marginal Job Functions

  • Staff and support key initiatives of the Offices of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving, including Commencement & Reunion Weekend, All In For Oberlin, as well as other alumni focused campaigns and initiatives.
  • Provide staff support for the Alumni Leadership Council’s Careers Committee, serving as their liaison to the office and partner in programming.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; 1-3 years of experience, preferably in alumni engagement, volunteer management, event planning, higher education, or other environment providing equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects from inception through execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide top-notch customer and/or stakeholder service that balances customer/stakeholder needs with the College’s priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work well in a team setting and with all constituencies of the College, with particular attention to sensitive and diplomatic handling of matters.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to balance a multitude of tasks while considering the needs of the entire team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Flexible schedule to permit event and weekend hours.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

Alumni engagement and/or development experience a plus.
Previous experience working with Oberlin College alumni and/or students a plus.
