Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Data Strategy and Implementation is responsible for:
Data Strategy
Establishing and overseeing a comprehensive data strategy for University Advancement including:
1. Policies and procedures in support of a sustainable data governance model
2. Building a comprehensive plan to uphold data hygiene and data integrity
The incumbent also oversees the needs analysis, design, development, quality assurance, implementation, and support of mission-critical enterprise data reporting, working in close association with the Director, Business Intelligence & Analytics, and the Director, Information Management and the Information Management team.
Implementation
The incumbent will possess strong project management, people management and client service skills capable of managing a portfolio of projects to implement the data strategy and deliver other priority projects for University Advancement.
The Director continuously anticipates long-term data and information delivery needs of priority to the advancement community and determines the most appropriate solution for achieving them.
Resource Management
The Director supervises key data and project management staff and is responsible for evaluating and stabilizing team skills and resource levels to meet the demands of the University.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION:
University graduate in Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent combination of formal post-secondary education and practical experience; A certification (like PMI or ITIL) would be an asset.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 7-10 years of demonstrated experience in managing database systems and information retrieval operations in a complex, decentralized, large-scale institutional, corporate or philanthropic environment; Strong project management and people management experience required; Experience developing reporting solutions using business intelligence tools and working with database management systems; Progressive data governance experience in a philanthropic environment would be an asset; Experience implementing and using metadata management tools. Must also demonstrate exceptional internal/external customer relationship management skills. Experience working with a fundraising department or other multi-constituency information management system in a higher education setting is a definite asset. Maintains expert knowledge of industry trends in the BI and Data Management areas particularly exhibiting strong initiative to keep up-to-date with new and revised data governance guidelines and standards as implemented by regulatory bodies.
SKILLS:
Excellent leadership, judgment and decision-making abilities, effective written and oral communication skills are essential. Strong presentation and customer service skills, project management experience, organizational and interpersonal skills are all equally necessary. The incumbent must possess the ability to lead a team in a unionized environment to supervise, train, mentor, organize, motivate and guide others. Ability to prioritize and address requests in a timely manner from several constituencies.
Excellent technical skills in agile and waterfall project management including methodology, research, planning and organization skills; Strong analytical skills ability to take user stories and requirements and abstract them into models and dimensional designs; Strong skills in using various BI tools for analytical purposes; Skilled in strategic thinking and problem solving; Ability to also clearly communicate complex ideas using diagrams, models and prototypes.
OTHER:
The ability to multi-task and continually prioritize projects and project milestones, due to shifting deadlines and new requirements, is essential; Exceptional leadership and teamwork skills; High degree of political acuity; Must be able to collaborate, influence and cooperate with team members, project sponsors, and other stakeholders; Must be able to deal calmly and effectively with a variety of stakeholders; Ability to exercise judgment, tact, discretion, initiative and determination; Ability to interpret University policy with regard to maintenance and access of information; Able to identify the need to arrange for the provision of education in the use of supported products; In-depth functional knowledge of relevant database systems, particularly CRM systems, in higher education is an asset.
