"Head of Household" filter doesn't work unless EVERYONE has a spouse

Options

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this. I've suddenly discovered that the Head of Household filter does NOT work the way I had assumed. It literally ONLY pulls people actually marked as Head of Household, which means anyone who is SINGLE and not connected to a spouse comes off the list as well. Seriously. I had assumed that a single person was also considered Head of Household for this purpose. Anyone find a workaround to this? I'm trying to simply get a list I've just now realized that this simple filter doesn't work.

Is this an NXT filter? How are you doing this search?

  • I discovered it in database view when trying to do a query. In looking further, it may be that webview handles the same query differently and only applies it to “spouses” who are not head of household." Which seems right. But database view does not do it this way.

I think I saw your post in the Facebook group as well. Generally, you don't need to filter Head of Household in a query if you're doing a mailing list. I occasionally use it for data cleanup / data integrity work, but never if my end result is a mailing lists. Those should be run through Export or a Mail process, and you can do head of household processing there.

Meredith, maybe it's just word interpretation, but where in query are you finding HOH as a ‘filter’? That tends to be in Export.

You can set criteria in relationships to pull both HOH and singles (from Knowledgebase 37625)

To find Constituents that are Head of Household even if they do not have a Spouse:
    1. Create a Constituent Query
    2. Filter On:
Spouse > Spouse Information > Import ID blank
    OR
(Spouse, Relationships, Individuals, This Individual is The Head of Household equals No
AND Spouse, Relationships, Individuals, This Individual is The Spouse equals Yes)

I have not encountered where if I use HOH filter in Export that it excludes single records. It can exclude someone who met query criteria who is married but not the HOH if it is selected.

  • Hi and thank for the comment! This isn't actually for the purposes of mailings at all. It's to generate a report for our school fundraisers for their record keeping of their progress. I'm trying to replicate for them in RE what they've been keeping in Excel. Their lists are by household, so that's what I'm trying to replicate.

  • Hi Dariel. Thanks for your question. I was trying to do it in Database view to get more data than I can get out of webview report. What I learned is that the webview Household filter actually works properly - in that it filters on the spouse rather than on the consituent. In database view, the query was more complex because you have to attach it to the spouse and I hadn't realized this.

  • Thanks JoAnn. You are right! The trick was to query on the Spouse record instead of the Constituent record. Thank you! (But how silly of RE. Can't they just make you a HOH if you are single automatically and save all this trouble?). I truly hate the way RE handles Householding. So much extra work with soft credits for spouses, etc…. Thank you!

Are the school fundraisers assigned to the records for an appeal, fund or campaign? If so, you can report on their progress using Reports > Analytical > Solicitor Performance Report.

I attach fundraisers to our fund or appeal and can run reports here showing money they've raised. Has a few limitations but worked well for our purposes.

Totally takes HOH out of the picture.?

Note, you can respond to all of us in one post so you don't have to repeat yourself. Those of us who are subscribed receive each one. (Can be hard to know they all come thru as we don't see our own posts.) ?
