Number of Recipients in Online Express Disconnect

I've tried chatting with Raiser's Edge support, reading many Knowledgebase articles, but haven't landed on the right answer yet. When we send emails through Online Express I notice a disconnect between the number of recipients in the list (when clicking on “Manage Lists” in Online Express) vs. the number of recipients reported in stats after the email is sent. Why is the number in stats so much lower? What happened to everyone else on the list? Note: I don't mean the difference between the query and what you see in Online Express. I understand how the query would have more email address (duplicates, etc.).
