Analytical report

Options
My boss has asked me if it's possible to pull the donors responsible for 80% of our donations.  This has me stumped.  I looked into the analytical reports, but the closest I got is the top 80% of donors.  That's not the same thing.  Any ideas?

Hi Lesli Cashin‍, I feel like you need another piece of information. 80% of your donations could be sliced and diced in many different ways. I think my approach would be to provide a donor category report (for the time frame-sounds like this is all-time giving) and have the conversation using that to help your boss define what it is that they are really looking for. What are they going to use this data for? What if someone is deceased, inactive, or lost - do you still want to include them? How to handle soft credits?

If there isn't a canned report then I would likely gather the data, export it to Excel with IDs, and use a Pivot report to capture the group. I would then take those IDs and use them to export the information your boss is looking for.

I hope this helps and look forward to reading how others would approach.
  • There is a report in RE7 called the Top Donor Report under analytical reports.  Under the Format tab - detail, you can select the count or the percentage of the top donors you want it to calculate.  Set the parameters of the report to what you are looking for (i.e. gifts this year, no pledges, to a specific fund etc) and then you can select either the count or percentage to calculate.  What I do when I need a specific percentage is to run the report first to total 100% of giving.  Then I get the total amount of donors (on the last page) and the amount they donated.  From there you can figure out what 80% would be and start running it by count or other percentages.  It is a bit trial and error but I have found that it is really effective when I need to tie an amount with percentage.  Hope this helps!
